Pinging in my 4.8is

Gang,
Anybody ever have any problems with pinging on their 4.8is or other X5s? This summer my 4.8 has started pinging under light load, and switching gas hasn't seemed to work. I'm sure if I take it to the dealer they'll tell me nothing is wrong with it, so I figured I'd start here.

Octane in Ohio is 93 for premium, and I've tried;
Shell
BP/Amoco
Sunoco 93 and 94

Any thoughts?

Could it be the re-formulated gas :dunno: Even after you used Sunoco 94 your still getting the ping is not a good sign. It's probably not gas related. Take it in ASAP.

I have an 06 4.4 with a little over 3000 miles and always use Exxon/Mobil Super in NJ and Sunoco 94 when I'm in Toronto. Never had a problem with pinging.

Good luck and let us know what the dealer says.

Cheers

Is It Not A Spark Plug Or Timing Issue?

Search for LVR's threads. He's having this problem with his 4.8 too.

Detonation. Summer gas blends.

Knocking or Pining? How many miles are on the car? I had the same problem. Let me know, I think I can help, through my experience...

agreed detonation is usually cause by wrong gas octane or bad gas mix/blend.
