Yes, I agree the article when I was owning my previous 01 made 4.4i. Too many problems to remember now. However, I don't agree the article on my 04 made 4.8is. So far, only alternator and right side door handle were been replaced, also left side window regulator been replaced. Nothing else. My opinion is acceptable.

The links in Karl Pfleger's article are not working anymore. At least for me they're not. So it's only the "title", but without description........

I'm confused. This thread is from 2006.

It says on the webpage link:

Last update: March, 2002 (except for July, 2006 addition of AM radio solution).

Yet the article begins with: "According to Consumer Reports in Fall 2003 .."?!

So people, who are agreeing, are agreeing that X5s from 1999 to March 2002 have more problems compared to other vehicles. Based on one source?

I hope noone with a 2004 and over is agreeing since they weren't even covered by the SURVEY.

Is that really enough of a sample size/time?! :stickpoke

On my 06, at 58,000 miles...Battery, Drivers door "carrier" (handle) one tail light assembly, headlight igniter and now the SAS (steering angle sensor), otherwise, built like a tank, rides and handles great (sport suspension is a bit stiff, but needed to get sport seats)
And best of all...the BOSS likes it...she feels safe

Hey, Daka, for your Z3, if you want to sell it, maybe post here. It's pretty active.

This is my two cents:> the X5 is not aan average vehicle. to compare it to toyota, honda and other average vehicle is unfair. this is a top of the line luxury, high performance vehicle with ride and handling to out perform other top of the line vehicle. so it will cost more and need more to maintain. If you are worried about maintenance cost and problems then i would suggest an average vehicle. If performance, handling, CLASS, Luxury, is what you are looking for then a top of the line vehicle is it;). And BMW is known for just THAT.:D

Knock on wood but my 06 4.8is has been a great car to date. The only issue I've had that is outside of normal "BMW maintenance" is the two front air struts and I knew those would go at somepoint. I've always had good luck with late build date BMW's. I suppose they've worked out most the kinks by then.,

My wife's 2001 X5 has about 2x the problems of my 1994 Chevy SUV (full sized, truck-based), even though I have 230K miles on my truck.

But to "make up" for it, parts & service on the X5 costs about twice $$ the similar job on the truck.

What's not to love? :sarc:

She owned the X5 from before we were married ... knowing what I know now, I wouldn't marry a woman who:

a) owns an X5.
b) insists on keeping the X5 after marriage.
c) possible exception: she is independently ultra-wealthy, blows her own money on the car, and therefore doesn't degrade our overall standard of living, retirement funds, kid's college, etc.
