Fog Lights

The past few days I have noticed that when my automatic headlights come on, my fog lights come on as well. How do I "unselect" this feature besides turning the fogs off manually everytime?

You have automatic HL's, or do you mean daylight running lights?

In my 02, I have to turn on the fogs every time I want them even if I keep my HL on auto. i thought this was the same for all MYs, or did this change?

I do not have the daytime running lights feature activiated. (I think the dealer is the only person that can activate them). I do have the headlight selector positioned all the way to the left on auto mode.

I WISH my fogs came on automatically

May I ask why?

I see every day a lot BMWs (and other cars) running with fogs and I personally do not understand this...why people are using theis fogs in clear daylight, in sunny California ;)

I have never used them here, only couple of times in very bad weather in Finland. This is just my opinion, it does not bother me....:rofl:....I am just curios to hear the reason

I use them at night, not during the day

I've noticed a lot of people with fogs on too. I've only used my a handful of times with very bad weather or sometime going through some of the dark canyon roads for the extra light. Outside of that, I just never had a need. Maybe people just think it looks cool? I really don't know, I've wondered why too, but never gave it much thought.

I love the look of Fog Lamps at night, esp on the X5

Hmmm is the auto H/L feature optional on the X5 or is that something offered after 01 models? Yeah the DLRL's has to be programmed by the stealership in order to have em on. Previous owner had it done on my SAV which I enjoy. To all here, I am one of those drivers who drives with there fogs on all day especially in my 740il. For some reason people just get out my way when they see me coming behind em. I have 7000k HID's installed. Heres a link of the install:

I just feel that, with all the people using daytime running lights now, parking lights + fog lights on = more obvious visibility due to the "staggered" lighting look it creates. that said, it DOES look kinda cool for some silly unknown reason lol. That said, I only do that around town: I ONLY use fogs on the freeway if i NEED to -- I feel that having them on attracts the attention of cops more.

Of course in the UK fog lights are illegal unless the visability is less than 150 Metres. I think this is because fog lights unlike normal lights are not 'checked' for direction etc as part of the annual test. In the UK if you think you should have lights on then the only legal lights are dipped or main headlights during the day.

I finally figured out what the problem was. Yesterday, I noticed my adaptive headlights were not working. Today, when I shut off my "automatic" fog lights, I thought things looked dark. I got out and looked and saw that my left headlight is out. Now it all makes sense. The car must sense the headlight out and automatically turn the fogs on to compensate.

What I don't understand is why it doesn't tell you that you have a headlight out on the OBC display or when you push the Check Control button. The vehicle is smart enough to tell you when it needs service, but can't tell you that your headlight is out. Doesn't make sense.

Get the dealer to reprogram them...
