SelfLevel SUSP.INACT warning appears...why?
My X5 doesn't have Variable Ride Height, so why would this message appear in the Check Control display?
|
 either you do and didn't know it or the computer in your X5 has been smokin' something!!!

nope.. thats why its self level, not manual ...

Also, when I press the Check Button, the warning doesn't appear? Could it be that it just inactivated that one time when I parked and is working again? I'm confused because I also get "BMW Assist Inactive" every 5th or 6th time I start the car, and I know it's not active. It doesn't display EVERY time I start the car, and it doesn't display in the list of errors when I push the dash button. So, following the behavior of BMW Assist Inactive (appearing every so often when I know it's 100% inactive), is my Self Leveling 100% inactive and the computer is not telling me everytime I start the car, or was this just a one time fluke that occurred when I parked the car? To make matters worse, the Check Side Lights also came on later in the day...my right blinker was flashing really fast in the dash, so I assumed I had a burnt out bulb. However, no bulbs were burnt out. I played with the blinkers and the hazards checking everything...no burnt out bulb. THEN, the "Check Side Lights" warning went away! WTF? |
I too have had the “Self Level Susp” appear once (but only once). In my case, I believe I know what caused it. I was driving through a car park that had a particularly nasty speed hump – very short and stubby.
Do you often travel over bumpy roads madforce? |
I got that message a couple of times in the past on my 4.4. If it does not last I would not worry.

Like you, this was the was only time I've ever seen this message appear. Sounds like you solved it for me...thanks! Please send a bill to my secretary and I'll have her cut you check for your services. |
there was a time when the self leveling suspension inactive also appeared in my car. The car was functioning perfectly and even with the message appearing. When i brought it to the dealer, the cause was was i've suspected. those pesky rats messed up mu wirings for the sensors of the self leveling suspension. Another instance was when those fu*king rats chewed the wired for the coolant level sensors. prompting coolant level insufficient warning:mad:
|
I had this warning before the first 600km.
My X5 has full air susp, front and rear. No bumps. I think the software running in the ECU is Windows 3.11. Dealer reset/reloaded it, no problems since, do same. |
a part called 'air supply control unit'
regarding the source of 'selfleveling susp. inact' problem, mine had the same problem and just had it repaired by dealer. the problem is a part called 'air supply control unit' which controls the rear suspension failed. Dealer replaced the part and everything backs to normal. the ride becomes more comfortable than before. the part costs me around US$200. Before the dealer replaced the part, the warning light had displayed in the dash board from time to time, but not all the time. so do not think it is ok when the warning light goes out. once the warning light comes up, there must be some problem in it, so get it to dealer for inspection.

self level suspension Inactive
This is my first time having problem with my X 4.4
I saw this display 6 months ago once and now again. I took my X from the garage and went over the curb slowly and the display showed again. I turned off the engine and it went away. Is it that sensitive? Also, how often was it displaying before you fixed it. Please let me know. |
I get it once in awhile but once I turn the engine off and back on it's gone. :dunno:

people, im getting this, but nobody has posted regarding the height of there x5 being different. my x5 has been dropped from the back right and i dont know what to do
|
What I could find.
"so I got a call from the dealer about the small issues from the X5. They told me that there was some service bulletin for reprogramming the ECH, which would take care of the 'glitch' in the software in response to the self leveling sensor???? " |
If your dropped, then it's time for the shop. What we're talking about is the computer spitting out false codes that we should ignore. A real failure ( a hole in one of the bags) is causing what you describe. ;)

Despite what the dealers tell you, there are several PUMA's for this, and BMW have known about it for a very, very long time.
PUMA 4798921-02 The first relates to an intermittent fault, but usually occurs shortly after the vehicle has been started and is common when outside temp is lower than 0 degrees Celcius The possible cause is water ingress into the EHC (Electronic Height Control?) wiring harness connector in the front right wheel housing. The remedy is to perform a diagnostic first, then check the connector for correct seating or corrosion, THEN look for other causes. The fault codes stored are EHC-74 (accumulator pressure remains constant) and EHC-76 (accumulator pressure falling) PUMA 4378200-03 This one relates to the error message "ride height control inactive" where the sensors are giving false readings even where the voltage values are ok (in my words, I believe this is when you get uneven ride heights front to back/left to right/poor operation) These values damage the EHC2 control unit which must then be replaced as well as the sensors if the new sensors status remains at 0mm following a ride height adjustment. This PUMA was released in July 2004 and I think you need the dealer to be doing some proper testing to get it diagnosed. Whilst there has been a lot of discussion on this board about inactive suspension messages, my (quick) search doesn't show any mention of PUMA's that we can talk to our dealers about...... Cheers |
My front and rear air suspension system was completely replaced under the CPO. Prior to this replacement, my X5 had numerous suspension problems - basically all that have been described in this thread.
|
I had this "self lev susp inact" error once, due to a blown fuse. Might want to check that before all the more complicated solutions.
|
Statdoc, What fuse was blow? The one in the glove box labeled air suspension? I read there might be one somewhere else but I don't know where that would be. My "selflev susp inact" message came on 2 weeks ago and has not gone since. I replaced the 4yr old battery, hoping that would fix it, and it didn't. Any other thoughts of how to get rid of that message would be great.

My turn: "Self Leveling Suspension Inactive"
Well I guess is my turn!!! Last weekend while driving my cluster lit up with error messages - Self leveling Supension Inactive, 4x4 light, & Tire Pressure Sensor light. On Monday first thing I brought it to the dealer and left it to be looked at. They then called me to tell me they had to replace the Suspension Control Module (?), which they did and called me to pick up the X5. When I showed up to pick up the vehicle the suspension went up but wouldn't come down so I left it there again!!! They then said that the sensors were bad and had to be replaced, and so they did but unfortunately the error message is still there and they don't know how to fix it yet. It seems they will be sending the diagnostics info to BMW NA and will get back to me with a date to bring back the vehicle probably on Monday to continue repair attempts. I would appreciate it if STATDOC could tell me which fuse was it that he changed or that had blown and what exactly does it control. Also if STEVED could posiibly tell me if there are any more PUMA's on this error besides the ones he mention on this thread.
Anyone with any other info/input will be greatly appreciated. TIA!!! |
I would check all fuses in the glove box. When i had that susp inact message appear on the display, i checked all the fuses and the interior light fuse was shot so replaced that and the message dissapeared like magic! Its a headache checking all the fuses but its wortha shot.
|
Mines booked in on Monday to have this same problem looked at.
The symptoms I have, are a car that tilts to the left (at the back) when parked. There's a very noticable hissing soud when I pull up and walk away from the car which is - I assume - the airbag losing all of its pressure. Then, usually after a minute or so of driving, I get the SELFLEVEL SUSP.INACT message. Sometimes, (usually on motorway driving), I dont get the message - wierd. So far, I haven't noticed any difference in ride or handling. I asssume the compressor is working double time to keep the bag inflated. I called my local dealer and asked them if they had a rear suspension air-bag (on the advice of this forum as this was probably leaking. They have supplied me with the part - 37.12.1.095.579 at around $200 Which is part 1 in the followowing diagram.... http://www.qualityibizaapartments.com/air.jpg Only thing is, I have a feeling I may actually need part 5 - the reservoir. It's no problem - as they will take the air spring back if thats not needed. Part 5. 37126755021 doesn't come up with a price. If anyone could advise on which one is commonly referred to as the 'airbag' I would be grateful. Probably find out on monday that its not the part I went and bought - and the other part has to come from Germany ... Although the car drives fine, I have a feeling the prolonged use will cause part 8 to fail (the compressor) and thats $800 ! I'll keep you posted on how things go on Monday... Cheers. Kev |
Self Level Suspension Still Inactive!!!!
Hello again!!! I'm back with some updates and questions. First of all this are the parts the dealer has replaced so far:
EKM Left front sensor Left front shock Unfortunately nothing has worked and after 4 long weeks they have told me that because I have the tv module (and therefore the television option on the main menu) the EKM was corrupted during programing, and so I had to remove the tv module along with the front and rear camera. They will try to replace the EKM tomorrow for the second time and if it works they will assume it was because of the items I removed and I will have to pay for the new EKM!!! While at the dealer today though I manage to get a copy of the faults appearing in the DIS report as follows: LCM - 99 Number-plate light faulty - License-plate light B6300_00016 INSTRUMENT - BD Electronic braking force distribution Instrument cluster (IKE High) kom EHC - 7F Activity plausability, front left- -- - -- - -- - Plausability error - Fault currently present - Frequency counter 1 - with kilometer reading 28300 km - Last atwith battery voltage 1.400000E+01 Volts - Last atwith accumulator pressure 1.012500+01 bar Ride -level sensors, front B3714_53HSS EHC - 64 Distortion plausability - -- - -- - -- - Plausability error - Fault currently present - Frequency counter 1 - with kilometer reading 28300 km - Last atwith battery voltage 1.387500E+01 Volts - Last atwith accumulator pressure 1.012500+01 bar - wrong direction B3714_53EHC Does anyone have any idea what all this means????? TIA for your helpful responses!!! -William- |
Update!!!
Ok, my X is finally fixed!!! The EHC ( not the EKM as I wrongly stated on my previous posts) was re-replaced and programmed without the tv module or cameras installed and it worked. However I'm still not convinced that this had anything to do with it and although the dealer tried to charge me $900 for the part and labor, I was able to convince them that it could of been that the original EHC module and the first replacement were damaged by the bad sensor and shock that was replaced and that therefore it was a 50-50 chance that it was caused by the tv or the bad parts. It also helped that I showed them a print out of LVR's post. Nonetheless, I do have to thank my service advisor and the manager at BMW of Bayside since they were the ones that made it possible not to pay anything at all and have it covered under warranty!!! Thanks again to all those who posted here as I probably would have ended up $900 poorer or without the X5 since I was already thinking it was a lemon!!!!

Has SelfLevel error come on today. Just curious for those will full air suspension, when the error comes on, does the button to adjust your suspension continue to light up?
Took the X to the dealer because it would occassionally startup in the morning with the front driver side suspension lower than the rest. They indicated some fault codes for power loss caused it. Now 2 days later, the car is flashing the selflevel error and is riding completely lopsided to the drivers side. I'm wondering if this another fault, suspension airbag failure or just the ecu failing. Looks like back to the stealer to troubleshoot. |
Got back from the dealer today. Seems the dealer just needed to clear some faults and the unit is back in order. Here's the faults they pulled
EHC - 64 Distortion plausibility error - Fault currently present DSC5.7 8A No message from ride-level-control control module - DSC passively switched DSC 5.7 61 Steering angle sensor, identification - DSC actively switched - no ABS control -stop- Anyone have these issues? |
just last night, the "self level susp inact" came on... checked the sensors, fuses, wirings, all seemed okay.. even resetted the ecu. the ride height is still the same. what seems to be the prob? is there a relay for the sensors?
|
I had this issue a while ago when the light came on and went off after restarting. Then it never came for a long time. Then just recently i left it parked for about a week and half and the light came again then after restarting it is gone again. Also i cheked the suspension by walking around it looks fine.
|
Only three prossibilities for this error messag:
1 level sensor malfunction; 2 air supply control unit malfunction; 3 leakage in air compressor Have your car diagnosed by DIS, it tells you what is going wrong. |
Quote:
I disagree, My problem was that i had a blown fuse for interior lights and when i replaced the fuse then the error message went away. You cant always know exactly what the problem is when you dealing with advanced computer system of a vehicle. |
Mine said RR sensor, replaced it and reset the code and it came right back and it is still on. Not sure what else to try.
Quote:

is there a relay for the self levelling? air suspesion? location? thanks!
|
how would i know if my sensor's not working without using dis?... if i remove the sensors and used a voltage tester at the socket, would i get a signal from it upon starting the car?
|
Quote:
i removed the sensors and there's current in the sockets. so i guess it's the sensors? now how would i know if the sensors are working? does the ecu needs programming when changing new sensors? |

Mine was reset with the DIS, I checked out the left rear sensor and the arm was all seized as well. Im going to replace this sensor as well and then i'll see if it fixes everything. Will update later.

i justhad this today, first started with the check rear and tail, then check brake light...then the dreaded rear sup inact, thee was no change in ride height or ride quality, checked all fuses and they seemed fine ...but msg was still there. however on removing the rear light assembly there was a hole in the metal of the contacts for the bulb, so after a bit of soldering and filing, all lights now working and the suspension message is gone...i guess various electrical glitches can cause this code to be thrown, i also found out that the faulty contacts from the brake light have caused a " check low beam message to come up. so once again thanks guys as these threads have proved invaluable!!!
driving around i seem to see loads of x5's with blown tail/brake lights and i kinda thot its a little niche market, so one could start a side biz fixing these (meaning Me..lol) |
This sounds similar to whathappened to me this week and now I swear the back looks like it is sitting lower than usual.

Re:inactive suspension message
Hi,
the inactive message did once come up on mine. Checked the fuse and it wasn't in cos i think some daft BMW mechanic did take it out and forgot to replace it. Insertion of a new fuse solved the problem and its never come on. I suggest you check the fuse or the sensors. regards |
Hi
took my 4.4 sport to the dealer re this warning light. He diagnosed a faulty sensor on the rear left. I purchased the new sensor and bracket from the dealer and fittted it myself. The old rod just needed some lubrication but the bracket had seized onto the old sensor. The job took no more than one hour and was very easy. However I still have the warning light. Will I have to go back to the dealer and get him to reset everything. If so hoping will do this for free as he charged me £70 for the diagnosis. Thanks |
Ya mine was fixed after I changed the other sensor. The sus.inact light went out after a couple of starts, I didn't have to get it reset.
I also replaced the sensor, bracket, rod, and even the plug since it was brittle. |
Self Leveling Light went off
I only got the indicator light one time.
I will take to the dealer and ask them to check the sensor. |

I got the suspension issue today and was told it was my module by the dealer.
But I also have the tail / brake light issue too. The light issue has been there for a while. maybe this could be the fix.... Will check the bulb and see |

The Part Number that I was told is BM37-14-6-773-999
I am not sure if this is the module that controls all four, but I assumed it was looking at the price of $732.66 Where is this part located anyways? Is it behind the glove box? |
I have a different part number on my etk however it begins the same. It may have been superseded. The sensors are around $100 each so I would say it is the module. It is located in the rear boot under neath the spare wheel you will see a black round compressor.Upon that is a connection of some sort the end of that is a square control unit which is the module. At least thats how it looks on this pic. This part is fitted to e39 5 series as well so may be able to get one from the breakers. The suspension does have a relay so always check that. Looks like an easy fit maybe just a plug out plug in part. If you have a friend with an x borrow their unit to confirm diagnosis. I never trust the dealers. Hope this helps
|
Thanks Gardham67...
BTW what or who is the "breakers"? You mentioned I may be able to get one from them..... Most of my friends have Pickup trucks or low rider cars. I told them they have no idea what they are missing....LOL Thanks again |
I called the dealer to inquire about the part.
I asked where was it, so they faxed me the part specs. They also told me that it has to be coded. So does this mean that I cannot buy a used one ? I may as well let the dealer put it in and weep over the cost....LOL |

Good luck! |
After taking the Subwoofer out and then the tail light assembly, inotice corrosion all over the connections.
Cleaned them off and the tail light/ brake light issue is over..... I just cannot find the air suspension module to see if there is corrosion there.... Gardham67 can u give me a little more detail of what u see in the diagram. All i see is the big black think in the middle An air canister on each side and one connector... |

okay here is the latest.....
I took out the subs, light assembly... Clean the corrosion... Had to make a run and after about 10 miles the auto suspension started working again.... Could it have been the bad connection fromthe light bulb holder causing the problem? I also noticed that... When I was getting the light/tail messege, the flat tire monitor was lit also. The front brakes were going into anti lock mode really easily too. One front tire would skip when I barely pressed on the peddle for a strong stop. Now that I fixed the tail light assembly, the tire monitor light went off, the suspension issue went away and the front brakes stop skipping as if they were in anti lock mode....STRANGE... Thanks for all the input everyone !!! |
My email address is

Thanks TwinsPoppa
That was some good reading. I did notice that the care wasnt as responsive So all these things are tied together.... Will keep an eye on mine for a while |
I also have a 4.4i and it appears on mine from time to time before I had it checked w/ BMW....now it's gone.....they said there was nothing wrong with the self levelling thing..... For your peace of mind, if it appears more often, have it checked....
|
OK...I must say I have lost all faith in my local dealership.
I took my x to a local mom and pop shop and I was in for a big suprise. After they pulled the codes, reset my system, my X5 really feels good. There were codes about the suspension and brakes. I was shocked to know that the dealership let me drive away without mentioning the brake issue. So I have made a new friend and they have made a new customer. If you are ever in Metro Atlanta give Harrison Motorsport a call. They will treat you right and they love BMW's. |
So what were the actual codes?
|
self level sus inactive
mine has the msg all the way no matter how i cleared it.....went to have it diagnose n it came back solenoid valve rear right inactive....so anyone knows what its the exact parts to be replaced?
|
Does anybody know if Carsoft 6.5 can test Self-leveling system on 2002 2003 X5 4.4i ? Front is down ,seems like left corner has no air .Fuses look ok . No light on the "up/down" switch.
|
I got in my X last night at the gym parking lot and the "Selflevel Susp Inact" warning appeared on my dash - WTF!!! I just had my car at the shop getting my bumper repainted (clearcoat was chipping - covered under factory warranty) so I'm wondering if this is related since they would have removed the bumper, disconnecting the headlight/fog light units? Maybe they forgot to connetc something correctly???
I've made an appointment today at the dealer to get this checked out. I'll keep you all posted on what they come back with etc. |

Yesterday I did a coolant change. When I drained the block it was quite messy (especialy on the passanger side, lot of splashing). This morning I got a self-leveling inactive warning. Do you think it's possible the coolant splashing caused the warning?

Sorry Didint know you asked for the codes.... Once I find the paper, I will post it for you..... |
when my "self level susp inactive" appeared, the dealer checked/diagnosed it for about 2 weeks. They can't seem to find the exact fault thru the fault scanner. they tested all the sensors and found the rear left to be faulty. they changed the rear left sensor. (another 2 weeks to wait for the parts to arrive).
|
I just got these ''wonderful'' messages 'selflevel susp.inact' and it look's like the X5 is leaning to the left side,
not that the left side is to low but the right side is to high :drunk: I just hope it's a sensor or a similar ''small'' problem, not the airbag it self. |
Til this day that annoying "Selflevel Sus. Inactive" keeps coming and going.
|
I got the message after lowering only to realize that when I relifted the X, that rear height sensor had went the other way. You have to lower it slowly and make sure the sensors go the right way. I adjusted it and message disappeared!

self check timing
hi all,
There are alot of replies and forgive for not reading all of them and if a repeat somethin... BUT since having my x5 4.4 i have had the susp inac warning around 5 times and every dealer who has checked says its fine, I can feel and see its fine. One of the master bmw service guys told me it is to do with the system checking everything upon startup and sometimes there is a delay between them causing the checker(don't know lingo here) to think that the susp isn't activated when it hasn't given it a chance. He reprogrammed the boot up sequence and i have not had the issue since. This reconfiguration does not mean that the sensor for the suspension is disabled it works fine. |
But mine suspension does NOT look or work fine,
the car is raised to the top on the right/rear tire and the ride is rock hard :( All of the other tires are in normal setting and it looks like the car is falling on it's left side. Could this be a sensor problem or something more serious ? |
Could be a sensor or control valving problem... I'd bring it in to the dealer as they GT1 tester can communicate with the air suspension control module and read the faults stored as well as activate functions like raising/lowering and read the sensors etc.
|
Now the car looks like a lowrider on the front and like a bigfoot truck at the rear :(
The dealer told me that when the airbags are totaly flat, BMW says you have to replace them :( But he hopes he can rays the car to its former glory through the computer, I just hope he is right. |
Hamar sorry to break the bad news to you man but if the bags are leaking their leakin... You have to get them replaced :(
|
Pretty much the only way the suspension will drop is if there is a leak somewhere, and after years of service it is usually the rubber airbags that leak. And when they go totally flat the weight of the vehicle is pressing on them in a way it wasn't meant to, and they usually blow completely out. Especially if someone tried to drive like that. I'd expect the bags to be the sole cause of the issue. Unfortunately the front struts w/air cost more than normal struts...
|
DO NOT CHANGE BAGS !!!
DEALER KOWS WHAT IS THE PROBLEM your problem should cost you $70 USA plus dealer's reset / calibration fee . if you know some one in your area who has GT1 - go there |
Quote:
You have no idea what the problem is without doing a physical diagnosis to see where the air is leaking to cause the sag. Saying there is no problems with the bags is like saying there is nothing wrong with a flat tire..... actual diagnosis trumps internet diagnosis hands down. |
The nightmare has begun, both front airbags are blown,
how can this be in a 2005 model with only 43k on the clock ? The repair cost is estimated $5000 Where can I buy the airbags online ? Please help me !!! |
The front bags are built on to/part of the front struts. ECS tuning has them if you want to buy them and have it done and a BMW specialist indy that has the GT1. (GT1 is required for setting suspension back up with proper ride height)

Just to share my recent experience with my rear air suspension... if a leak on an airbag it not fixed, it will over worked the air pump, and for my case I was lucky to end up with just a blown fuse.... and both rear sides laid flat of the wheels.
I got the fuse and the airbag for both side replaced. Quote:

The only problem is the price, I thought I could get them cheaper. I will have to pay $1600+shipping +$1600 tax here in Iceland = $3200+shipping+install http://www.xoutpost.com/images/smilies/bawling.gif |
Oh, didn't notice you were in Iceland... the dealer may be cheaper to get the parts through then to avoid the high shipping costs.

Weasel, Thank you for your patience w/ me and my pm's.
I took my truck to Zims auto here in Bedford,TX. Still waiting for my call back. My issue: I went to start the truck and got the error msg. Drove fine, went out for lunch and it was sitting on the tires in the rear. (I dont know how those mini truck guys can stand that bouncing around ) Nothing to indicate an issue prior. Checked the fuse and still good as well. Wish me luck:thumbup: |

The front shocks aren't that expensive! I got mine for $750/each. My buddy threw it on for me for $50 and it took care of the issue.

the price here in Iceland is ca.$1855 each :(
|
I just got this error yesterday. It was on all day. I think I know whatmay have caused it. Went to costco, and I dropped a case of water in the back. Maybe that broke something? In any event, how likely is it that the error will self correct itself? I don't want to drop $5k on the car.
|
Quote:
I would hope not. From what I've seen, the rear self leveling suspension could be anything --fuses, the leveling sensors, etc. I managed to squeeze mine in under warranty, they checked for 'pinched air hoses and water in the spare tire well'. Ended up getting a new compressor for it, haven't seen the warning since then. |

GT1 reading says that the voltage reading on my right rear is something like 0.64 while the one on the left is 4.60. The mechs switched sensors and still the one on the right has a low voltage and sometimes 0 reading. Any ideas? |

Sorry, wasn't able to reply right away. I asked about the adaptive headlights because I think they share the same sensors as the self levelling suspension (for cars with full self levelling suspension). And maybe that's why tbc111's error was with the LCM. Just a thought though; someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Had the break pads and discs changed and the suspension warning has gone away too and my ride height adjustment button is working too.... not sure what the connection is ..... |
wow old thread but good one...mine came on once a few weeks ago...it happened when the temp dropped over night...its never come on ever since. i should prob still get it looked at....i think theres a slight height difference in the rear, one side is higher then the other....but can't really tell...maybe i'm just too paranoid....

It seems like this comes up quite a bit, a false self level susp. inact warning. I'm sure the sensors in the bumper can go bad, but I am convinced that the problem is commonly related to batter voltage fluctuation. Try charging the battery completely or replacing it with on Odyssey or similar if yours is getting old.
|
As someone mentioned here before...I would check the fuse first. This happened to me not too long ago and it turned out that the the 35amp fuse needed to be replaced.

electrical nightmare 02' x5 4.4
3 days ago the self leveling warning came on. it happened a few years ago and went off next time i started the truck. yesterday when i started the the truck the level warning was still on and the radio wouldnt turn on. Nav worked but no sound. when i shut off and took key out there was a buzzing from under the dash. i had to put key in and turn on/off a few times to get it to stop. WTF!! today i have a dead battery. monday going to the shop ( i guess my mechanic gets another tuition payment for his kids). at this point, i'm hoping it catches fire overnight. any ideas?:dunno:

Well, I cleaned my MAF sensor today, to get rid of my emissions light. So I disconnected the battery, so big deal. Reconnected, and the emissions light is gone, thank god, however the SELF LEVELLING INACTIVE warning is now on. The car is level, and it wasn't on prior to the disconnect. Anyone had similar?
I have driven it, turned it off, turned it on, dc the battery again and it's still the same. It is very annoying. Car rides the same, feels the same too. |
Does anyone know if the self-leveling suspension will still work if it can't communicate with the cluster? I had the warning on before I let the car sit and now it won't raise back up. I'd like to know if it's the computer or possibly an issue with the connection to the cluster. All my fuses are fine.

Checked the fuse?

if you have a 4.4 you probably have the rear air. ever have your spare out? notice the big black bell under the spare? the compressor is in there. or you can look under the back and see the air bags. try doing a reset. disconnect both battery cables wait 30 mins and connect. that fixes alot of things
|
check the relay.
|
Quote:
Where abouts is the relay? And how do I test it? |
I think it's in the panel in the back on the passenger side.
Just searched and look inside the compressor dome. |
Cheers, found the relay, but you know what else I found. The cause. The air ride control module had somehow become disconnected. Plugged it back in and its good to go.
Thanks for the help. |
your best bet t this point may be to bite the bullet and have it checked at the dealer. they charged me $125 to let me know what went bad on mine. mine was the control unit which is located by the battery.

milsy, you lucky sob lol how did it become disconnected? those plugs are a sob to get off

2001 BMW X5 3.0i Sport Having Issues With Self LEV HELP
HI,
I been noticing that when I wake up in the morning my x5 is completely dropped in the back. Most of the time is just in the right rear side and when I open up the doors to my car sometimes the car starts rising again. On rare occasions I find the whole rear of the car has dropped. I then continue to drive off and sometimes the car drives very strange like a low rider bouncing all over the place. Recently I noticed a small icon on my dash wish an SUV drawing with arrows pointing down I am speculating it has something to do with the self leveling. Sometimes when I get out of the x5 the car seems fine but then a few minutes later I hear the noise as if air is coming out from somewhere on the right rear side of my car and the car starts to drop. I really need help and don't know where to start. Does this sound like an easy fix like just a fuse or can it be a pneumatic spring (airbag). I don't want to bring it to the stealers and have them charge me all crazy monies. WHERE TO START??? ANy diagrams help would be greatly appreciated. I am pretty handy. |
If you can hear the air coming out, find out where it's coming from. Most likely it's the air bag, but could be one of the hoses going to it as well. Replace whatever is leaking.
|
Quote:
Yea i just finished driving it and my whole right rear side is at the bottom and I keep getting an icon on my dashboard with an suv with an arrow. I think it may just be the airbag but not sure why the other side would also drop sometimes. Also I don't hear this air noise all the time sometimes both sides are up and working fine? Are the airbags considered the pneumatic springs? |
Quote:
Sounds like one of your airbags has a leak, but to be certain, you should bring it to a shop that specializes in BMWs. Either a dealership, or an independent shop. Personally, I would recommend Bavarian Performance Group, or Turner Motorsports. Either shop can be found easily by googling. If you'd like to (or end up needing to) replace your air-springs, you could try Arnott: BMW Air Suspension Parts & Kits - Arnott Industries I recently had my 2005 X5 4.8is up on a lift and noticed that it had Arnott air springs. This kind of surprised me; I figured it'd have BMW (labeled) air springs. I don't know if Arnott air springs come stock in X5's, or if mine ended up being replaced -maybe someone can comment on that(?). Either way, they're built for our X5's, have a lifetime warranty, and they're MUCH less expensive than the same parts from BMW: RealOEM.com * BMW E53 X5 4.8is LEVELL.DEVICE, AIR SPRING AND CTRL UNIT If you look at the parts listing, a single air spring costs 187.40 (x2 = 374.80) Arnott sells a set for (198.50 + shipping). Lastly, if you're truly serious about doing the repairs yourself, I would recommend Bently's BMW X5 Service Manual. It's roughly $100 depending on where you order it from (large red book). Let me know what you end up doing and what you find out. |
In Addition;
My air suspension system works --except when it gets REALLY cold. My X5 is parked outside and when the temps drop into the teens -or lower- I get a "SELFLEVEL SUSP. INACT." message up on the dash. It doesn't go away when the temps go up or when I restart the car. I've had the car at the shop for other work, and when the techs clear the error to perform a diagnostic, it doesn't come back. The leveling system works fine again, and all is well. Has anyone else experienced similar symptoms; the self-leveling suspension system throwing errors in cold temperatures. Would love to know if this is a failing sensor(s) or just a failure in engineering/design? I don't know what the error codes are, but I'm planning on buying this ECU reading tool to help try to diagnose the problem before temperatures rise on average: eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices Thanks in advance. |
if the suspension level alert comes on ,try taking to fuse out to set set the system.

Thanks for the tip! |
Yes the compressor has a dryer built into it. If that doesn't engage, or just dies, you will get a lot of moisture in the system.
Its a compressor thing in general. Figure it like this. The compressor sucks in air, we know that. Air has moisture. Moisture will collect. One way to get rid of moisture is to drain it, somewhere low in the system. This would be a good thing do to if there was a low place in the system that could be opened up. I doubt that there is, so the system uses a dryer, I can't see this working to well though, and it is probably the cause of all these part failures in the suspension. |
Quote:
The water won't come out before the air because it'll be resting at the bottom of each component. What about replacing the compressor (to ensure the dryer's working), waiting until the summer when temps get up and then completely evacuating the system. With dry air coming in and hot temps, that should help some of the water evaporate and exit the system. I suppose if that actually worked, I could just raise and lower the car using the air-ride system itself over a few weeks repeatedly; raise the car, let it sit for a day, drop the car, repeat. Am I stretching here? Just thinking out loud. |
Quote:
I just know, from working with tool compressors, that moisture makes all the stuff go boom. Systems without drains, and dryers, best thing you can do it dump the air in there when not in use. So maybe lowering the car over night would help. I really don't know for sure, just my thoughts on the matter. Still in your case, I think you should check the cheap relay first. Check connections, corrosion stuff like that. |
Quote:
Again; thanks for the suggestion. You've opened me up to troubleshooting ideas that weren't even on my radar. |
While we are on the topic...
I was troubleshooting my left front. It's been dropping overnight. I found it leaking at the fitting that goes directly into the bag. So, I took it off to replace it. I also removed the line and the fitting at the valve under the passenger door. I figured why not while I'm at it. Got the new line and fittings all in, started the engine and the bag filled right up. No problem. I hop into the drivers seat just in time to hear the dreaded chime and see SELFLEVEL AIRSUSP. INACT pop up on the display. Now my raise and lower switch won't do anything. I tried disconnecting the neg. cable in the trunk, did nothing. Have started/shut down about a hundred times, nothing. The suspension is sitting nice and level, it is adjusting (moved the rod and watched it adjust) but the freakin' code won't clear and I can't raise or lower manually... Any other thoughts on how to clear the code myself? I tried pulling the two fuses above the subwoofer labled for air suspension already. |
Try disconnecting the neg and positive in the trunk. I've heard people also touching the wires together, and leaving them like that for 30 min. (That's actually the instructions for Audi / VW) I did this on my car the other day, when I was having problems with the GT1. That reset everything. Which was a pain in the ass as I had to reprogram all the crap that's in the car. Bluetooth, radio, seat memory, time, all mpg reset, I mean everything.
Otherwise, I think you might have to get someone with a GT1 to clear it, or similar computer. |
Quote:
It's also a lot cheaper than a GT1. |
Quote:
*the 4x4 light went out as soon as I started driving* |
Have you actually scanned the car to see what code it is throwing? Mine had two leaking front struts, got them replaced, car stays at perfect level. However, I'm throwing a code for the compressor (it doesnt have enough power to fill the bags up) so my switch won't raise or lower the car. Now i'm going to be replacing the compressor, and you need a GT1 to properly reset the self level suspension system
|
Quote:
Yea I think you will have to get someone to scan your car and clear that code . Ok one more thing you can try. Pull the fuses for the suspension. I doubt it will work at this point though. I have a feeling the error is written to the computers and stored. Might be worth a shot though. The 4x4 thing will go away as soon as you start driving. Was on my car too. |
Quote:
Trust me it is stored! The air suspension faults must be reset by dealer or someone with GT1! I was pulling fuses and disconnecting the battery and it just stays there! |
susp probs
I gave up on my faulty suspension, I went ahead and ordered coils from a coil sprung x5 of similar year off ebay and swapped my rear leaky bags for the coils, plus some custom perches.. It has worked great since. She does sit a little lower than stock and the susp inactive light stays on but for about 80 bucks i dont have to worry about coming out to a tail dragger in the parking lot. just some food for thought hope it helps:thumbup:
|
I bit the bullet and purchased the 1.4.0 scan tool for BMW. Now I finally have something to go on but still don't know what to try next.
I currently have the "selflevel air susp inact" light on. My code reader is showing codes for the reservoir sensor, reservoir valve, & supply sensor. These codes were not present and the air suspension was working fine prior to replacing the airline to the right front air-strut (had a slow leak at the bag fitting). The air suspension inactive light popped on for the first time as soon as I opened the driver's door after the repair. The air suspension is now dropping quickly after parking the car and airs right back up when I open the driver's door. I can hear the compressor running, the bags inflate and off I go. I have noticed that if I start the engine before letting the bags inflate all the way that the compressor stops and the ride is rough (front end bangs) over the first couple of bumps and then the compressor kicks back in and smooths out the ride. The airbags are new(er) Arnotts. Soapy water shows no leakage at the bags or fittings. Both sides are now dropping equally as if the exhausting on purpose. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? This is driving me nuts! |
Where is the reservoir valve? Can you check that? Seems like all is working when the compressor is running, but something is leaking for sure. You need to get this done soon, or you will burn the compressor.
"Can't put in real oem link" It seems part 1, the valve unit might be leaking. Are you sure you tested those connections well? Also the pressure ACCUMULATOR might be leaking, which is why both your fronts drop. If they were fine before, as in only one side dropped, I have a feeling the connections are not good. What's the procedure on replacing these parts. Do you need to use teflon tape or something on the connections. I have my share of compressor (garage compressor) upgrades and rebuilds that I always use the tape. Once you turn off the car, can't you get under it and start spraying soap water on the connections and whatever else. I figure at that pressure you should be able to find the leak. |
|
Just a quick update... I'm still fighting this issue.
Last night, I replaced the right front leveling sensor, the reservoir pressure sensor, and the rod that hooks from the lower arm to the leveling sensor. I reset the control unit with the 1.4.0 scanner and the system started working. The air compressor came on right away and the whole car leveled out at the correct height. As soon as the compressor stopped, the front end of the car started dropping and then the compressor kicked back in. The car raised up again and dropped again. This continued until I shut the X off and then it dropped all the way down. I pulled codes and now have: 22 (034) Reservoir Pressure Sensor 23 (035) Supply Reservoir Pressure Sensor 17 (023) Supply Reservoir Exhaust Valve 09 (009) Reservoir Valve I think what is happening is the valve under the passenger door (Part# 37246779713) is leaking/exhausting the air pressure for the front end. I plan to take the bottom covers off again tonight and check with soapy water. I ran short on time last night. |
***Update***
I pulled the bottom cover off from under the passenger side again tonight and soaped up every inch of the air system from front to back. I shot soapy water up on the front and rear bags and every fitting. I took the trunk apart again and soaped up the lines and fittings there too. STILL NO LEAK FOUND... I was continually running back to my laptop to air up the system and then checking the dripping lines while the car dropped. Now we get to the part that I'm almost embarrassed to admit... I had left the trunk lid and driver's door open long enough to wear down the battery. So I popped the hood to put the charger on. With the hood up and the laptop connected, the air system inflated yet again and there it was. The faintest hiss coming from the passenger side strut tower. I shot some of my spray solution at it and sure enough, bubbles... I pulled the large black cap off and applied more solution, big bubbles. Now is when I discover that the 14mm nut in the center is nearly ready to fall off due to the F@#*ING idiot that improperly installed it. The dealership I bought the car from had the strut replaced just before I picked it up. Apparently they damaged about half of the threads on the nut and didn't have another one to install. So rather than getting another one, they ran it down until it stopped which was about 4 threads in. Now, I know the bag is BRAND NEW as of 3 months ago. Does anyone have hope that a new nut and tightening this thing down will allow it to reseal??? There is noplace open this time of night to get an odd metric nut so I'm on hold until morning... |
Quote:
If you are just going to try to run a new nut. Clean out the threads first. Use a pic, thin screwdriver, whatever you have to get the old crap out. Spray some penetrating oil on it. Stop tightening when the resistance get decent and back off. If the nut gets hot, take it off and use a different one. Hot nut, the threads are going to go on it. I've done this before, not fun, but doable. Spray some penetrating oil on it By the way, which software are you using? |
Slick - Luckily my shop is equipped with the tooling needed to fix/chase threads. The bolt is still in good shape so I'm just going to do a quick clean/lube and try the new nut. When the idiot reused the old nut it wouldn't go on past a couple of turns and he either wasn't man enough to force it further or had at enough common sense not to force it.
I'm going to take the whole strut out before trying the new nut and make sure it's not damaged on the top from slamming around in there. The software I have is BMW Scanner 1.4.0 I purchased it on ebay from germanautorecycler for under $150. It came with the interface cable and a disc containing the program. So far I have been able to read and clear every code and use it to reset the air ride (EHC). It DOES NOT do ride height calibrations but I'm very happy with it so far. |
Quote:
|
i really like the idea of being able to read and reset the faults, for 150 on ebay it may be worth it to me.......
|
Well - I can vouch that it works. I have had it for about 3 weeks now and am loving it.
|
***Update***
Thursday night I didn't have any success fixing up the 14mm nut on the top of the strut so I had to wait until morning to get a new one. Since I had the time, I removed the strut assembly to clean/inspect for damage and lube the o-rings that seal the bag. I found the top two o-rings rolled and cut, one of the two plastic rings smashed, the main shaft (that the 14mm nut threads onto) worn badly on one side, and WORST OF ALL the cause of all this failure. Although the instructions on the Arnott website are perfectly clear, they were not followed when the original repair was made. The "puck" that sits atop the airbag and gets compressed in with the 14mm nut was installed upside-down. It looks like it should go in that way but it will never seal properly (which it didn't). Soooo, rather than call up Arnott and order another strut as my first impulse told me to do. I decided to try and see if I could salvage this one or at least make it through the weekend. I got new o-rings for the top, lubed the two at the bottom, put it all back together with the puck right-side-up and torqued the new nut to 55 ft/lb. It's now after midnight on Tuesday and my air suspension has been sitting perfectly level since Friday morning. The self level inact. light is still on and the switch just blinks 3 times when pressed but at least I'm holding pressure now. I still have active codes for the valve and pressure sensors but I doubt they are accurate. I replaced the reservoir sensor with a new one and there was no change. I'm guessing either a damaged wire or the module has failed. |
Great news. Glad you are updating this. Would be even better if there were pic. I have a hard time visualizing the parts without pics.
Can you reset that susp inactive, and maybe clear all the codes. Is it possible they are just all stored in there, and nothing is messed up anymore? |
Jeez! Reading through this whole thread has me expecting the worst! I recently got the "Selflevel Susp Inactice" after I took my X5 4.6is in to have a scratch repaired on the hood and my rims repainted (had to get rid of the curb rash). As I am driving away from the repair shop (Magnum Collision north of Atlanta) the error pops up. They have since took it to the dealer only to call me back and say it's my EHC module. I find it hard to believe that this just poped up at the same exact time they were messing around with it. He told me that the vehicle was up on blocks so they could remove all of the wheels/tires and repair/repaint the rims. My guess is that this has somehow screwed something up.
I sourced a new module for under $100 but then read about the reprogramming that has to be done via dealer or indy shop w/ the right equipment. Any suggestions on what else I might try? I will check the fuses tonight. I also have a new battery cable coming for the negative terminal which I broke the nut off of when I was installing the Mediabridge last week. Could that be the culprit? Thanks for any help and great thread! |
Great news! Although the dealer was trying to tell me that I needed a new module, it turned out to be a burned out fuse. Everything is perfect now. Dealer/Stealer! Thank God for website like this and people like you guys for posting. Thanks everyone!

Ask and you shall receive! I had taken these photos with my cell phone during the process but didn't get around to uploading them now. The first two pictures are of what I was dealing with when I started. Then some shots of the galled shaft and finally a reinstalled air strut, inflated and still holding air. |
Quote:
On my laptop red codes are active, yellow is inactive. I had them all cleared at one point but the bastards went active again as soon as I started the X and now I don't even bother clearing them. The suspension is aired up, holding pressure, and leveling perfectly. Only problem is the ride height switch on the dash doesn't work and I have the inact. code permanently on my display. Next time I get near a dealer I'm going to see if they can resolve it once and for all. But I plan to put an arnott in the driver's side first and get rid of the current bag which I suspect is original. |
Great pics, thanks. Yea whoever assembled it prior was an ass. Glad you got it fixed up.
So try something. On my hunt to fix my rear soft close yesterday. My electrician found a couple of issues that bothered him with our BMWs. First off, my relay was jamming and causing problems. According to wiring diagrams that he has, the relay that is closest to the tail light, does two things. It runs the air susp, and the soft close. Now the problem is that according to him, those relays are garbage, and he always sees them fail, causing all sorts of random shit problems. He suggested switching out all of them to Seimans or Hella brand. He had a Seimans one that he put in there, and right away, my hatch started closing and opening. I am going to try and source them today somewhere on line, and let you know what I find. I would not be surprised that stupid relay is giving you issues with the switch. Try swapping relays, there are two of the same kind in there. Both were purple on my car. |
Unfortunately i've joined the Selflevel Susp.Inact warning.
Hopefully mine case wont' be as bad. I took 5 adults out for lunch at the pub today, drove over some real harsh speedbump. On the way back to work, Rear Brake Light Warning came up, follow by Selflevel Susp.Inact. I hope its only did that because of the extream weight in the back + badass speed bump trickle its fancy and gave me the warning. |
Forgot to add, the suspension looks normal, ride hide and everything else is ok.
