Thanks for sharing your experience.
Bought a Westfalia hitch recently in Germany including the BMW specific harness (518 euros - USD 658) and will have to install it soon.

I have now completed the brake controller install as well and took a 1000 mile trip over Labor Day weekend. The X5 impressed me as I was towing a 5000lb enclosed trailer up steep mountain grades. Everything performed flawlessly, though gas mileage on the trip averaged 10.2mpg.
