Newbie Questions
 

My wife bought an X5 a while back and we're out of the warranty / service period on our 01 X5. I just did an oil change and was able to reset the service light. Now, I just have to figure out how to change back the temp from C to F. :rofl:

I have a couple newbie questions about the X5:

1. What oil is favored? I used Mobil 1 0-40.
2. Can anyone recommend a service manual? Bentley doesn't seem to make one for the X5.
3. Who is a good online retailer for X5 parts such as brake pads, rotors, etc?
4. Any recommendations on brake pads & rotors?

1. I think you can use Mobil 5W-30 or use BMW's OEM Castrol synthetic oil 5W-30 (which you can get cheap at Crevier BMW)

2. Service manual, don't know....BMW has CDs but only for dealer use, but I'm sure someone has a copy of it here ;)

3. Crevier BMW (714) 835-3171, ask for Art Corona. Tell him Kewl X5 from the internet sent ya :D

4. Use OEM Pads and rotors for best braking performance. If you don't like the dust, there are other alternatives. Check out the X5World site with their infos on X5! :thumbup:

That M1 0W-40 is hot stuff, euro by design if mem. serves and v.hard to find in USA. Oil brand and weight is like asking what's your fave movie, here. :D

Imo, since your are off warr., I'd keep using the M1 0W-40 or even Castrol's 5W-50 Syntec for summer, long cruising, etc. I'm convinced the 5W-30,(or 5W-40 top in some MY's manuals) is for mpg, but I think the 50W top has much to offer vis a vis higher rpms, higher speed long cruises and slows the visc. shift in stop n go. My 2Cts...enjoy your new X.

MD is correct, this is like asking about fav movie. So, here is my input IMHO:
No lubricant can compete with Mobil 1. Run this stuff in all of my vehicles including the Harley, works good, last long time. IRT weight, this depends on your location. For colder climes I would recommend 5-30. For us down in FLA where it gets very hot, I personally run 10-40 in all of my 4 wheel vehicles and 15-50 in the HD. I have logged over 500K miles on various vehicles with the stuff without any type of engine failure. Good enough for me. :thumbup:
The factory CDs are the way to go for reference (if you can't get it from this site). Lots of places to get them like E-bay and maybe someone here as well. I continue to run OEM rotors and pads (yes they make a hell of a mess) but they will stop the beast each and every time. I get mine from Eurasian, they seem to have some of the best prices on OEM brake parts. Welcome to the board and good luck with the X'r. :)

That viscosity prod has not yet trickled into our local
WallyWorld...must be the lack of culture/tech here in the Mtns. :rofl:
