E53 Value...

is starting to fall fast. I talked to a reliable source at the Stealer today. E53's are starting to trade for 4000.00 to 7000.00 less than normal. It's a combination of gas and the long anticipated E70 release. If you are considering a trade or a retail sell for that matter...do it quick. I'm really on the fence myself. I'm considering a 6 series and a mini for the CEO. I can't stomach a 4000.00 hit on my beast, so I might be making a move real soon. Whatcha' guys think...are you getting the same info out there.......Phil

I think you are seeing the premium E53's drop, the 3.0's are not dropping that much in Norcal, they don’t have the V8 stigma that higher gas prices tend to give. The E70 is not competing with E53 3.0 CPO buyers but might be a problem for the larger engine E53’s that are still pulling close to what a new E70 will be. They need to move those vehicles down to make a new E70 attractive to the buyers that are looking to drop new vehicle cash.

4.6 and 4.8’s will not stay at the premium much longer and I am sure dealers are not giving what they use to for trades, they don’t want a bunch of those older high end models taking any attention from the E70. Lower end E53’s are one thing, but the top of the line rigs might cause buyers to think about a CPO rather than new. No dealers what that.

That typically happens when a new model is release. Some buyers wait for the new models, the E53's will start to look a little bit older, and prices drop. Same thing happens every time. So if you are thinking about selling in the near future, sooner is better than later. Good luck.

I'm a Used Car Manager for a BMW dealership. I appraise and buy BMWs every day, so I'm pretty good with BMW values. In the past several months, I have noticed X5 values start to drop, but it has not been all that dramatic.

The 3.0 models are still doing well... 2001 and 2002 have seen little change, 2003 have dropped a bit but nothing major. 2004, 2005 and 2006 models have dropped more noticeably because they tend to be priced very closely to a new model, and as a result the incentives on new ones have trickled down.

The V8's are a different story. "Plain Jane" 4.4 models are down quite a bit... these are the non-sport, non-nav trucks. They're basically selling for a very small premium over 3.0 models. Gas prices have hurt these trucks. Trucks with Sport Package and Navigation are still commanding a premiuim, more of a difference than just those options should command.

The 4.6 and 4.8 models are still relatively rare, and are holding up ok.

So what is causing this? I don't think it's a huge drop in the value of these models. If anything, it is the market starting to return to normal. For the past few years, there has been a strong export market for X5s and that really inflated the market. Some people were paying as much for 100,000 mile trucks as they would pay for similar trucks with 50,000 miles. For a period of time, the value of an X5 was based on a few simple factors: engine, color (black, silver commanded big premiums), navigation (BIG premium), and whether it had sport package (even BIGGER premium). Mileage was irrelevant if the truck met this criteria. Wholesalers bought all the X5s that they could, even with 100,000 miles, and they ended up on their way to Eastern Europe.

The export market for these cars has cooled a bit, and the market has come back down to reality. I really don't think it is a sign that the E53 is loosing value. My guess is that other than a minor drop in the next year that is inevitable with the release of a new body style, the E53 will hold strong resale over the next few years. This is quite different from experience with the E38-E65 and E39-E60 changeover. In both of these cases, continuing to date, the old bodystyle have continued to drop in value significantly. A late production example of the E38 or E39 has taken a huge hit in resale in the past few years. I'm predicting that this will not happen on the E53, at least not in a major way.

I was at the dealer few days ago and they had a 2003 ///M5 in the showroom with a price of $53k. I hope the 4.6 /4.8 hold similiar values down the road. I know....wishful thinking. ;)

LVR 08-15-2006 05:56 AM

Bought our 2003 X5 3.0 Sports for $100k and just got a trade in price for the 2007 X3 (fully loaded) of $58k...... and that was with the new car manager ringing me up trying to get my business with a good deal..........

bozo 08-15-2006 06:05 AM

At 18mpg and 24+ gallons of premium $3.30+ fuel, that isn't a shocker :)

4.6is Ryder 08-15-2006 09:22 AM

I don't know you guys...my stealer told me he had a 03 X5 4.6is on his lot listed for 45k. It had about 29k miles on it... plus it sat on his lot for 103 days and didn't move. He claims he had to let it go for $38,000. I think that is a huge hit and find that hard to believe. This guy is usually a straight shooter with me, considering that I have purchased (2) X5's and a ///M3 from this dealership. You guys make a good point regarding all models drop when the body style changes...but if his figures are correct, this is worse than the E39 drop IMO.............Phil

2002Silver4.6is 08-15-2006 01:40 PM

As a recent buyer of a X5 4.6is I know the market quite well after searching nationally for vehicles for 3 solid weeks. The market on 02's is from $33,000 for 50k mile cars up to $40,000 for 30k mile cars. The market on 03's is from $35,000 to $43,000 for the same mileage figures.

I bought my 02 4.6is for $33,500. It is silver, 53k miles, nav, new tires, mint condition.

I do not understand why sellers ask for the high $40's when there are so many really nice 4.6is's out there for sale well below their offering price. I had Vista Motors a BMW dealer here in south Florida offer me a blue 03 4.6 w 40k miles for $48,000!! Geee what a deal!

The pressure on the price is a combination of factors including gas prices, the 02's and 03's are all hitting the 40k - 50k mile range and becoming less desirable to their original owners and the leases on these vehicles are all coming up.

I found www.Cars.com and www.Autotrader.com to be good resources. A good used dealer is www.LuxuryMotors.com more than a few X5's at reasonable prices. THey were offering free shipping a few weeks back.

Good info, Sarafil. Thanks for the insight!

I experienced the E39 drop first-hand, when I sold my '00 M5 this past December. The E38 story was just a little bit different, however, as at least during the initial MY02 period the E38s were showing a 2-3K increase at auction. Once the E65 shock and awe factor wore off, I know the E38s showed a more typical changeover decline.

The experience with the 2002 745i was a very unique one... the reaction from the marketplace was a bit mixed, and as a result the initial decline in E38 values was slightly delayed. But rest assured, the value did drop and it did drop hard. I remember one year buying a bunch of 2001 740iL's and paying all the money for them. I also remember over the next year some of those clients coming back with those cars looking to change into something else, and that they had lost abnormally huge amounts of money because the value of that car had dropped by a huge amount within months. To this day, the wholesale value on an average 2002 745Li starts with a "3" and the wholesale value on an average 2001 740iL starts with a "1". That's a big gap...

Wow, Great Info

I am in the process of looking for a used 4.8 for around $50g's. I am moving from a 4.4 with sport and navi. I have found a 2005 4.8 with 11k miles, and navi for about 52g's I don't know if the value will hold up. Hmm what to do??????

mdrobc13 08-19-2006 01:20 AM

I picked up my 2003 X5 3.0 CPO with 22k for $32k out the door from the dealer 2 weeks ago. So I think values are pretty good. Dropping maybe and my dealer couldn't get the 4.4s out the door it seems. Me I wasn't interested in the V8 for the cost of maintence on the engine and the gas consumption...as for speed. I got a Dinan HP upgrade and A/T Software upgrade for 1/2 price each so that suits me just plenty. :)

Now with the new E70 price released, anyone can comment the current E53's value drop? I am asking this because I am in the market for a 2004 or newer E54 4.4. but I saw saw the E70's 4.8 price, I am thinking maybe I should wait a bit longer or just get a brand new RX350 instead. (currently, a loaded 2004 X5 price almost identical to a loaded brand New RX350 price)

RX350 comes nowhere close to handling and performance of X5. Besides, RX350 is s chick car.;) BMWs hold good value. I was looking for 2003 E39 525i for someone not too long ago and could not find one for under $25k with less than 50k miles.
