extended warranty??? anyone?

guys, I really need your opinions on this one~ I am always debating on getting the extended warranty for 6 yrs/100k miles or not. do you guys think the 2004 X5 3.0 will break down over time or milage? I have it garage kept night and most of the day, and I drove 22k miles / year and I am expecting 30k miles / year for the comming 3 years. so now I am at 44k, and 3 years from now, I am expecting at 134k miles. I don't know if it would make sense for me to get the extended warranty for 6yrs and 100k miles. The car has been great and I have had no problems with it at all. most of the driving is freeway driving... what is your opinion of paying 2.7k for extended warranty for the 3rd and 4th year of my X??? consider I just graduated in 2005 and going to grad school this comming fall... money is kinda tight with the expensive tuitution... I would rather save the 2.7k on reserve... thoughts ??

Quite a bit of info here--did you do a search? IMO an extended warranty usually at least pays for itself....no matter how well you take care of your vehicle, stuff happens.

i was debating also and just optioned for it. there are so many unexpected things that have gone wrong with others that i didnt want to deal with it when the time did come. Plus i knw for my self that if such a situation did rise i would be able to fix it and the fact that i need a car everyday its came out of be cheaper and wiser to get the warr. So far it has covered inspection 2 and they found a leaky secondary water pump so that has to be changed to so already its paying it self off.

Get the Extended Warranty!

I've had my x5 4.4 for 5 months and already the air suspension mechanism has been repaired (cost without the warranty would of been atleast 3 g's they told me). When my warranty runs out, I'll shop for another X5.

If you're within bounds of the extended warranty limits then I say go for it! Brake (pads + rotors) alone will cost you around $2K at the dealership....

Wouldn't that be covered by an extended maintenance plan, not by extended warranty?

I gather the US dealers offer both, with different terms and $$. Not sure, since here we don't get extended warranties from BMW, only the aftermarket.

JCL: You are correct that there are two offerings from BMW - the Extended Maintenance Plan and Original Owner Protection Plan (Warranty).

Turtle: Go for it! Do a search and you will find tons of info. I recently posted about my very expensive aircon repairs that almost paid for the cost of the BMW extended warranty.

do you guys have any feedback on the extended warranty, what would I be count responsible for? except for oil filter, oil change, air filter for cabin and engine, brakes?? will they pay for the leaky water pump? would you guys advise me to get the extended maintenance also?? cuz... just flash through my mind, how would I know the water pump is leaking if I don't look into the engine bay too much...

If you are going to buy an extended warranty and you are the original owner, I would get the BMW Original Owner Extended Warranty. It doesn't cover everything, as most extended warranties do not, but it will cover most major things. Like I said, it can save your butt and your wallet.

The extended maintenance is up to you. I bought it because I don't have a trusted independent BMW mechanic I can go to. Some people would recommend skipping it if you have a good mechanic to perform your routine maintenance stuff. I figured also that the price would pay off with a full set of pads and rotors at dealer prices so I thought it was worth it. Also, consider the price of an Inspection II. Ouch!
