1st to 2nd gear Clunk/Thump?
 

G`Day All
I recently bought a 01 3.0 X5 with 37k on the clock.
Its a lovely car to drive and still looks/ feels "new" accept for one small issue.
Whenever I slowly/ gently accelerate from stop and then coast, the tranny really clunks/thumps on the upshift into 2nd?
This only ever happens at low speed of less then 5mph / 10kmh?
Is this common in an x5 ? or a known problem?
Should I sell now?

Mine does this too - has since we bought it last year. Tried to recreate it at the dealer for a service tech and was unable to do so. Going to try again in a few weeks to see if they can fix it.

The tranny is electronic but still relys on fluid pressure to tell the trans ECU what to do. The trans is nothing more than a big pump. Try not to lift off the throttle right before it would normally shift, this causes the pressure that was building to cease and the ECU sees that the vehicles rolling speed is now deservant of 2nd gear rather than a higher RPM 1st gear. If you must accel only to roll slowly try to accel past the first shift, then decelerate. This should help you clunk/thump. Hope this helps and makes sense.

IndyX5 it definetly happens more so after you lift off the throttle ie. stop start traffic
It only annoys/worries me because the rest of the time the tranny feels great(short sharp up and down shifts)
2 years ago when I was in the States I hired a V8 Lincoln LS and it did the same thing only 10 times worse!
