New to me '01 X-5 only one key

I just bought an "01 4.4i . The guy only had one key. The nearest dealer is about 100 miles from where I live. Can I order one online with the VIN or how do I go about this?

I have the same issue and was wondering what one of these keys is gonna cost me!

Someone can correct me but I believe a new key requires registration and drivers Lic (identification) in person at the dealership.

Yup you can order one - it cost me around $80.00 - Programming the key on the other hand was a bit of a mission - The dealer had to do it for me - something about having BOTH keys inserting the old one cycling it six times (on / off...on/off .....) then doing the same to the new key.

Thanks for the replies.
I've owned this thing less than 24 hrs and it looks like I'm already planning my first trip to the dealer.

You got 2 choices. Spend a lot of time here (best choice) or spend more time at the dealer. I guarentee you will have a lot more fun around here. Either way.:welcome: :band:

Thanks Quicksilver. I think I'll hang with you people. From what I read here this vehicle may be my new hobbie.

You are totally correct. Dealer will then order the key from the BMW key bank, which usually takes a few days.

I had mine 3 mts. and I've been to the dealer a few times, only once for maint. though, the rest is for picking up wear and tear parts......this forum gives tons of info, you'll learn a lot......btw I have the same X as yours.
And last but not least, ..........post pics.

I just picked up a second key myself and I had to go to the dealer with D.L. and the title (they said registration would work as well). It was $150USD and it was fedex overnight to the dealer where I went back to have it programmed. Took the guy about 30 seconds. They had a valet key and another key without the remote for somewhere around $35 and $70.
