Winter/Snow tire recommendations?
 

Hey Guys,

I've been considering getting some winter rubber for the X to mount on some extra 17s I have laying around. I'm leaning towards the Dunlop SJ6s, but would welcome any experiences/recommendations... I'm looking to mount these in 235/65-17. Options so far are:

Dunlop Grandtrek SJ6
Michelin Latitude X-Ice
Dunlop Grandtrek WT M2

Problem is that everyone who reviews their purchased tires at TireRack loves whatever they bought. :) Most of these differ in price just by a few dollars... and as far as I can tell, there isn't a clearly superior winter tire. Currently I have the stock SP 18s, wearing the Michelin MXV4s... In terms of driving conditions I'll be doing some snow when skiing/etc, but mostly wet and cold roads here in the Pacific NW...

i think on here you will find a general concensus of pirelli scorpion ice+snow

If they still make them, I have had 3 winters of outstanding
use with Michelin Alpins, in the 17" size: not so extreme
that long, dry road trips eat'em up, yet tenacious on our
very steep snow&icey mtn roads.

edit...looks like the Alpin has been replaced with the
Latitude Alpin, but 50 bucks more than the Latitude Ice
you linked. If it is at all similar, it was a helluva winter
tire...however, all of those tires you listed are titz, imo.

They are rated very well, never heard a complaint on them... They seem like really good winter tires.

Nokian Hakkapelitta is very higly rated in Scandinavia (made in Finland for scandinavian weather) for its performance in snow and on ice.
For us it is important that the tire can handle severe cold conditions , like donw to -40 deg (same for C and F) with the rubber still managing to be soft and grippy, and at the same time handle the days when the temperature raise above freezing. I have unfortunately not seen any feedback on the SUV tire, but knowing Nokians reputation, I wouldn't hesitate a second to get them.
I didn't even know they were making SUV tires, but when my present Scorpions wear out, I'll be looking for Hakkapelittas too.
That new "ECO stud" setup seems smart, it will save the studs, and the roads, when driving on bare ground.

I have a set of Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow which I use on my 01 X5 (18 inch, 109V) in the winter. I hate them! They are very loud to begin with. Furthermore, due to the camber of the BMW's the inside shoulders wore off. Never again. I'm looking at the Michelins Latitude Alpin.

I'm a newfound sucker for vredestein wintrac 4 xtreme... :D ...and i ride them on a 275/40/20 setup...Can only imagine how they would handle on 17's :thumbup:

I'm on my second winter with the Pirellis. They've been great on snow and ok on ice if you're careful, although on smooth black ice most tires are useless unless you have studs. I have about 25k miles on these Pirellis now and the rears will be ok for next winter. I'll mount them up front and get new ones for the rear. I've done most of my driving with them on dry roads, so the 25k miles is not too shabby.

nokian and pirelli are great too.
