Hi Guys,

I also have a noise in my '03 4.4i. I'm told it's a collapsed hydraulic lifter that screams on start up for about a second or so. Happens when the engine's hot or cold but not on every start.

I spoke to the local dealer service advisor who told me BMW are aware of the issue but won't fix it until it's lasting 3 seconds or more. Very noticable and all my passengers wince when it happens. Anyone got any ideas of cause/fix?

Cheers

David

fram is the worst crap filter out there and it's been known for years. didn't even know they make filters to fit BMWs

just had same problem with my 2003 X5 4.6is - I think the centre part of the oil filter was loose allowing oil to drain back when engine turned off - my non return valve seems to be at top of this centre piece

Oh yes a good quality oil filter, oil and oil treatment additive makes a difference.
