smokey diese

hi all, i would like to ask some one to help me diagnose what's wrong with my 2002 X5 diesel. It has 75000 miles and it smokes like a battle ship! Especailly on hard acceleration and enough that you can't see the car behind. It is otherwise fully serviced and drives great. It sounds rattley on start up but other folks told me that is normal.Should i be worried about the amount of smoke? I tried injector cleaner and now stick to shell diesel. thanks for your help

What color is the smoke? Black smoke on acceleration is common for diesels.

hi thanks for the reply, yes it is black smoke and plenty of it.

A lot of black smoke means you are burning excess fuel. I have not seen a diesel X5 but fairly common when mash the pedal.

....you need an oil change plus a new fuel filter for starters
cheers

I had a 2002 BMW 330d with that same engine; it always puffed out black smoke on hard acceleration from the day it left the showroom till the day I sold it.

In contrast, my 2006 X3 3.0d is virtually smokeless; even with a tunit box hooked to it.

I've had a couple of BMW engineers tell me that 2004 saw some changes in the electronic fuel management of the 3.0d engine that eliminated most all the black-smoke-on acceleration effect.
