'Check brake linings' error message

Just got a 'check brake linings' error message- I am assuming that pads need to be replaced?...or is it something else.
Does anybody know if BMW ALWAYS change pads and rotors or do they also measure thickness of rotors and then decide. I am under warranty so no $ this time at least.
thanks

BMW will replace everything, they will not turn rotors.

And yes, your pads/rotors probably need replaced as the sensor is indicating.

Wagner is right - BMW dealers won't turn the rotors and will make you pay for the new ones (unless you're within the maintenance period of course). In reality, the rotors can take much more abuse than pads, so replacing just the pads and turning the rotors is more cost effective solution. I was quoted $800 for just the front brake job by the dealership. Took it to the mechanic I trust and had both front and rear brakes done for $400. But don't drive with the light on for too long, otherwise you will have to replace the rotors as well as pads.

When I replaced my brakes the second time (at 58K miles), my mechanic just turned the rotors and the car/braking felt fine. As advised by the mechanic, I do plan on replacing the rotors on my next brake job.

Also, keep in mind that once you get the "Check Brake Linings" message, you will have to replace the wear sensor. It's a "one shot" part.

BMW does not design the rotors to be turned, they are very thin to save on rotating mass. Turning the rotors can sometimes make the rotors warp easier.

I just had this done by the dealer. The light came on at 28k Miles. So I took the truck in and they only replaced the front pads. No rotors and said the rears were fine.

Thanks Cosmos
That is what I was wondering - does the dealer always replace the rotors and pads together or if rotors are in spec will they change the pads alone.
I want them to change both seeing as it is under warranty and I am sure that the next time (when it is my dime) that that both rotors and pads will need to be changed.
Maybe I will just bed in my pads for a few more miles so that the rotors need to be replaced also...
