superchip?
 

Looking at getting a superchip instead of the dinan upgrade. Number one, no dinan for 2006. Number two, greater torque change up to 31lbs.
Supposed 18hp gain with 2-3 mph gain on highway. I know some will argue with the numbers and I want to hear that. But the torque with low end improvement is what I really want out of my 2006, 4.4 . Any input? Gas engine owners.

if you mean Superchip as in "SuperChips like www.superchips.co.uk be careful as the upgrade is not done through the OBD which means it is easier for the dealer to spot as they go into your ECU to do the upgrade.

I didn't know there was a superchip available for a U.S. 4.4. Where'd you find it?

nope don't think so. Superchip is done by going into your ECU and NOT via the OBD - port. am I making any sense yet.

well at least that is how they upgraded my X5

it is always best to get a remap done via the OBD port.:thumbup: I would suggest anyone with a X5 to go down the road of a MTH file you buy the cable and software you download your ECU settings and e-mail to MTH in Germany they tweak them send them back to you and you upload back into your ECU which means you have boths files on your computer and you can return your car back to standard takes about 3 mins to do and is ideal when the car is due in at the dealers for any work also should they overwrite your upgrade no worries you just upload it again when your back home.

Costs about £600 GBP but they defo do the X5 as I asked I have the MTH on both my Mini's

Also don't know about the States but you will find in Europe a lot of the companies offering you performance upgrade like new induction kit exhaust plus a ECU re-map it is actually a MTH file they use for the re-map.

You just got to trust me on this one if you want to tune your X5 via re-map then this is the only one to use.

I have nothing to do with this company or gain from suggesting you use them.

I am only going from my findings and others to just how good their re-map is.

maybe i'm confused as to what powerchip does then.
i'm pretty sure someone on here said that they too send
u a cable of some sort and u download ur current map,
send it to them, they send it back and the user installs
the new map via the cable and the software.:dunno: i'm lost.

yeh that is pretty much how MTH work

but you got to remember once MTH recieve your file they change your ECU settings hence the word re-map then that is what you upload back into your ECU.

you then have both ECU files held on your PC standard file and tuned file meaning at any time you can upload your standard file back into the cars ECU should you need to.

what I am saying their re-map is a very good one IMO the best one.

ok, i believe it depends on the year X5 u have.
i think pre-'03s, powerchip needed u to send parts
in, but '03s and newer, they send the cables to u.

Yeah but to remap the ecu don't they go via the obd port connection under the dash?

Four year old thread and full of bad information,I am afraid.
How you remap a car depends on what ECU it has and what equipment you have to carry out the procedure.
Just to give an example,four years ago,all BMW cars with EDC16 ecus,had to be done via BDM(direct to Ecu) and only recently has it been possible to do via OBD but the equipment to do this is still very expensive and takes a long time(+30 mins),so quite a lot of "tuners" still do it via BDM.
We have also been dealers dor Superchips Uk for a number of years and only for the last 2-3 years have we been able to map Edc16 Bmws via Obd with our Vspire equipment.

ta for reply but I would like to know if the re-map to the ecu regardless of how it is done is detectable.....as per my last comment one tuning guy sent me this:

The dealer tools are not as sophisticated as our tools all they are able to do is diagnose problems with cars not changes in ECU software... If your service person was correct we would not be in business and BMW would not be investing in the EDC17 Tricore locked ECUs to try and stop tuners, which Alientech have now unlocked with the EDC17 adapter...:confused:

To the untrained eye the vehicle will appear to be totally standard and BMW's diagnostic systems will not report any difference to the vehicles ECU, however, a good technician well versed in the way a particular vehicle works will be able to analyse the injection duration and a few other parameters to deduce that the system is indeed running different to original specifications. That said, these vehicles are so much better after a remap that its plainly obvious it's been remapped anyway as the difference in performance is night and day."


Not sure how the injection duration is measured?through the obd once again?

Injection duration is one of many parameters which a mapper changes in the ecu file to better performance.
