Stealer!

I brought my 2002 x5 4.4 to the dealer for servicing and it ended up being $1800

Wagner 10-11-2006 06:10 PM

OK, any more information?

ThrasherFan 10-11-2006 11:45 PM

Would you be willing to share the details of what services were performed, parts used etc?

EZDozzit 10-11-2006 11:48 PM

Hmmm can you elaborate a little?

racerboydrew 10-12-2006 12:29 AM

Sorry about it being vague

I brought the car in to have the oil and brakes changed and they then told me that some oil lines were crushed in the back of the engine ($600), I needed new brake sensors($70/per), door lock actuator ($400), plus numerous other things coming to a total of around $1800-$1900. All on a visit that should have only cost around $200. I am glad though that they are so thorough.

Wagner 10-12-2006 06:34 AM

Well if you're glad their thorough, and you're paying dealer hourly rates and parts costs, what is the big gripe about? BMW's have never been known as a cheap fix car.

X5Flyboy 10-12-2006 11:09 AM

"brake sensors"??!! - aren't they only changed during a brake job? - door lock actuator is replaced only if you complain about it - did they not discuss any of these "repairs" before going ahead with them?????

Mark, he said he got a brake "change"...

Not sure we have all the info. ;)

Thanks for the details! Based on the work performed sounds about right for a dealer. Those crushed oil lines at back of engine are probably the crankcase vent hoses which deteriorate after about 40K miles. The hoses themselves cost about $75 from the dealer and it took me about an hr to replace them. Pretty expensive repair from dealer, but it's consistent with most dealer repair costs.

noncom23 10-12-2006 11:56 AM

No extended warranty I guess.

X5Dawg 10-12-2006 01:08 PM

I was charged $120 the other day for them to reset my airbag light - I told them what had happened (window regulator), but they ran a diagnostic test on it anyway.

You can buy the tool to do that for about 125.00.

They gouged you even for a dealer, brake sensors are 16.50 LIST PRICE. I got the same yesterday, I needed a bumper bracket that we don’t stock and the list price was 3.35, Local dealer charged me 7.71. I did not say anything, I’ll just be sure to never let them touch my car unless it’s warranty work. There are more trustworthy dealers I could use.

They always ask why I don’t my cars from them, I tell them because parts and service gouge if they can get away with it. No sense doing any meaningful business with a dealer that treats customers to unreasonable charges. I drive an extra 30 minutes and go to a dealer is honest.

Oh, forgot about this - I was having an Inspection 1 done and they left the checklist in the car for me to review. There is a place where they record the air pressure in all the tires. They had the spare listed at 45 psi.

Interesting thing is my spare was at home in the garage. Guess the tech drove to my house to check it

Hey Dawg,

Where do you get most of your maintenance done in the ATL area?

One cannot make that stuff up...sort of in the same process as
the CPO "inspection", I suspect.

United BMW - Gwinnett.

My X has almost 95K miles on it and I really would like to find a good independent shop in this area, just have not gotten any recommendations from anyone.

X5Flyboy 10-14-2006 01:35 PM

I have to admit, in all my travels and dealings with "dealers", my best experience has been home in Idaho falls,ID - "typical" dealer rates on the east coast have been $97.50/hr - and I have been typically charged 1/2-1hr for changing a light bulb - I've had wheels marked up then "discounted" to list price - I've been charged "estimated time for installation"($220) vs actual time(<1.5hr) - In Idaho, I get min 10-20% off parts, labor rates are <$70/hr - I feel like I'm that Greek Diosgen??? with a weak light searching in the dark for an honest man(dealer) - I guess I'm lucky enough to find one

the one here in Charleston is not bad, but is not shy about charging you either.

kjack 03-21-2007 04:31 PM

crankcase hoses need changing?

are the replacement of crankcase vent hoses covered by cpo warranty?

Zulu95 03-21-2007 04:46 PM

The CPO inspection consists of placing a sticker on the window that says "CPO Inspected". The real CPO inspection begins after purchase and the new owner finds a long list of problems the dealer is forced to fix but gets $50 pocket money each time from the punter plus BMW NA pays for the parts/labor.
The items covered are supposed to be set but each dealer has his own take on it. Some do CV joint boots, some don't. Some cover ball joints and track control arms, some don't. Some will do the PCV hoses, some will not.
All information I shall be considering next purchase! Like my old Sales Manager always said " You got to give them a reason to do business with you".

I notice BMW NA don't seem to hang out here as they do on other minor BMW boards.

xnsf 03-21-2007 04:47 PM

i got CV boots replaced under the Maintenance Warranty :dunno:

wheelman 03-21-2007 10:55 PM

The Maintenance Warranty on CPO yes covers that, but some people myself included just have the Basic (I think that's how you put it) coverage to 100k. My boots were not covered and the dealer told me the shafts were not covered because of boot failure.....Doesn't matter now, I'm out of CPO and happy with my INDY shop for things that I can't do myself.....

1113mills 03-22-2007 06:37 AM

I must admit, I live in a relatively small part of the country (central VA) and my dealer is great. It might help that I get all of my vehicles services by them & have befriended the serv mgr.....they have always discounted my parts and service under the "good customer" pile.

It may also help that one of my close friends is one of thier best customers...just went through a corporate merger and bought a new M5 for himself & a convertable M6 for his wife :wow: the M5 is a beast!
