Removing Gauge Cluster...
Hi Folks,
If I want to remove my gauge cluster to fix damages caused by a K-40 install will I get an odometer tamper light? If I don't start or move the vehicle while the cluster is out will all be ok? Thanks for any help! |
Only able to relate my personal experience with it, and I've removed several from several X5's...don't disconnect the battery as you do it and work fast and you shouldn't get the tamper dot.

work fast? Yikes, how much time do I really have to work with?

I've done what I needed to do within an hour and never got the tamper dot. It could be relative, it could not:dunno:
I don't have infinite experience to speak from- only installing chrome gauge rings & never fixing dead pixels or something similar which requires the cluster to be out of the dash for long periods of time. JV |
As long as you don't drive the vehicle with the cluster out you should be fine. The tamper dot triggers when the car checks the odometer reading on the cluster against the odometer reading in the LCM and the odometer reading on the key.
I haven't seen any documentation on this but my theory is as long as the cluster reading matches one of the other two it passes the check. |
I never got the tamper dot either when I did the guage rings in my previous 04 4.4. I didn't even disconnect the battery. To be safe, don't try to start the engine or drive while the cluster is out. I did get the 4x4 inactive warning once I put the cluster back in, but after you turn the steering wheel lock to lock the light will go out and all returns to normal.
