Oh if wipers could talk...

then they would be real "chatter" boxes. Or at least my passenger side is.

Until now for the past two months i've just ignored the chatter but now since chicago's starting to get some flurries i need my wipers chatter free. I've changed my wipers twice since i got it and i've even bought the 303 wiper treatment from bavauto. But still i get no luck getting rid of that chatter.

Does anyone know anyways to get rid of the chatter?
Or am i going to have to bring it in for servicing?
Cause i'm starting to think it's the tension arm. (I think thats the name for it)

Also i'm wondering if you keep your X5 with the wipers in position 1 where the rain sensors adjust speeds, do you need to turn it back to position 0 then back to 1st position EVERYtime you get in your car again? Because when i leave my car with it in position 1. The wipers won't work until i turn them off then back on.

Thanks

wipers

Hi,
when I bought my x5 2001 4.4i I had the same problem with chattering passenger side wiper? bought new wiper blades etc just like you did but it did not work?
What I did was get a small adjustable spanner and very gently twist the arm just below the blade not very much and low and be hold no more noise!
The rear wiper chattered a little as well and this got the same treatment, what a difference!
Try putting a little bit of a twist on the arm, not sure which way try it and see it worked for me.

To restart the auto sensing just move the center speed adjuster one click either way

If it is raining and I just start my car the auto wipers wont work until I adjust them or turn them on-off again.

As for the wipers talking. Solution? Music :) Although it must be nice driving in the rain without listening to music.

Seriously , I always thought wipers were supposed to make a noise.

Not sure if you have tried hp1's solution yet, but here is some more detail on it. The angle of the wiper blade is most likely your problem, since you have replaced the blades themselves, and cleaned the glass.

The rubber blade is designed to flop over, so that it has a trailing edge when it is moving in each direction (left and right). If there is a leading edge, it will chatter. The best analogy is a shopping cart wheel. Try turning the shopping cart wheel so that the castor is reversed, and it won't run smoothly (the wheel will flop back around). That is what your wiper blade is trying to do.

Look closely at the blade where it touches the glass, after stopping it in each direction. That will tell you which way you need to twist the arm, with a small adjustable wrench, so that it is neutral. You can also watch to see which direction it chatters in, as you will want to twist it away from that direction. If the arm has too much twist in one direction, it is holding the rubber so that the edge is leading, and that creates the chatter.

When the blade is moving to the right, it should look like this: __/__, not like this: __\__, and the opposite when it is moving to the left.

Hope this helps.

Jeff
