Trunk hood handle stopped working

My trunk hood does not open when the other 4 doors are unlocked. When I unlock all doors, the trunk can't be opened. It feels as though the hand button for opening it is stuck in the "open", or pressed in position (like there's no more room to push it in. However, when I press the "trunk open" button on the key, the trunk pops open.
Has this happened to anyone?

I've heard of this happening...

I believe you need to take the switch out and remount it... GL!

it's the rubber that gone bad, specially in cold weather it'll shrink up and not make good contact with the locking mechanism, it's about $3 dollar part you can pull it out and put the new one on yourself. i'd take the old rubber piece out first, and click the spots to see if it opens/closes reattach old rubber. mine drove me nuts like that, because i'd open the rear lid from inside the car, walk out of the car, as the drivers door closes behind me, from the motion, the rear lid would close back up lol, then i'd have to go back in push the inside button on the console again, and this time leave my drivers door open, then get the lid opened lol

edit: part is called actuation unit/trunk lid

I have the same problem!!!

I brought it to the dealer 4 times already and they haven't been able to fix the problem!!!!   Have you made any changes or did it just stop out of the blue????

When old the rubber part keeps the contact on and the trunk cannot be opened anymore with the trunk hand button. It did the same on mine until I changed the rubber piece. Very easy to replace, takes less than 5mns

:iagree: This was also a problem on the e39's.

I am in debt to you all! Thanks for the info. A cheap and easy fix is music to my ears:thumbup:

I forgot to ask:
Does anyone know a part number for that piece? I work near a dealer and wanted to pick it up on the way home.

I had the same problem, but it was fix, my was due to a broken off plastic that was suppose to manually pop open when push.
It made sense to me cuz I had my trunk lid painted, someone must have not been careful :tantrum: ...Those guys actually broke my grille clips too, so perhaps it isnt that complicate as you think. All they did was to glue it back so it activates the switch. ~ Good Luck

The micro switch in the handle is not returning to its prone position after the handle is released.

I fixed mine by dismantling and installing a compression spring on the switch actuator button. The switch internal return spring in the micro switch is too light and will not detent the rubber membrane to allow the switch to actuate correctly.

Hope I am deciphering your fault correctly.

Well, i fixed mine last night. I removed the rear portion held on by 4 torx screws, then I brought the piece onto my workbench for better lighting. I removed the rubber cover, lubed it and greased the points where it contacts the switch, re-installed the cover, and it works better than ever. It seems to me that as the cover aged, the female "U" portions on its back came un-aligned from the switch portions and thereforepressed the switch "on" constantly. Certainly an easy fix.

Like a wise man on TV says, "eeeeeeexcellent...."

Sorry to resurrect an old post folks but I have had some tailgate issues too.

I posted re my exploits here http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e53-forum/...-clicking.html having failed to locate info re this when doing lots of searching. I recently found this thread after PeteM on x5drivers.co.uk posted up a link in response to someone else in uk with a trunk/tailgate issue.

I have a couple of questions :

1. For those who have disassembled - I have got as far a removing the section with the 4 torque screws but I was concerened I might damage the unit around the rubber button as it appeared to be a sealed unit. i tried prising edge of rubber switch gently but I stopped for fear I would crack or damage the surround The wired plug also seemed reluctant to separate with ease though to be fair I have not done much work on bmws before so still getting used to their connections/fittings. Any pics or tips on disassembly appreciated.

2. Similarly any tips comments on best type of lube and grease to use appreciated as I dont want to compromise the operation of the unit by using too mucjh of the wrong lube/grease.

3. Did anyone get this sorted at a dealer (fulanito ? and/or others).

Was going to get dealer to look at this but if I can diy fix it then I will as dealers tend to just remove bits and replace them as opoosed to actually maintaining or fixing them.

Cheers & Thanks in advance

Mine got resolved soon after my last post on this thread. It seems that when I ran the wiring for the front camera I caught onto one of the wires and snapped it. Needless to say I had to pay for the research and repair!!!! Good luck on yours!!!

AW8 11-26-2007 01:12 PM

Thanks glad all sorted - mine should have gone in to dealers today but had to rebook as now working.
