Replaced steering rack at 25K miles??

I have been having problems with some noises in the steering when the X is stationary. Seems similar but not identical to some problems others have had here.
Local stealership replaced the steering rack and assembly and the car drives like new, very tight steering. I have 25K on the X - don't you think that this is way to early for the steering to go?

I had some other stuff done at the same time - glad I am still under warranty or the whole trip to the dealership would have cost almost $3,500 - 4,000

~ $1,800 for new rack
+ 4 wheel alignment
+ front and rear pads, rotors, sensors
+ new rear taillight assemblies (kept getting check brake light message)
= ~ $4K

Seems to me that was a design flaw due to the wieght of the SAV and the joint and the set not being strong enough to dissapate the wieght across the rack when hitting bumps and such.

Agree, seems like one of the many design flaws

Cleaner, 3 steering racks in 70K miles?, thats impressive.

It probably only needed one, but the dealer seems to think a rack change is the answer for a clicking in the steering column. I did not have to start up the car to know that did not work, but hey I have a brand new rack on BMW at 70k.
