2004 X5 3.0 Throttle Delay

I have a 2004 X5 3.0 and from the moment it was driven off the lot it had a bad case of "throttle delay". When accelerating you could push the throttle down a good one inch with abosolutely no response. Then, the throttle would kick in with about 4,000 rpms and suddenly launch the car forward. Not only was it annoying, it was dangerous. Of course the selling dealer denied anything was wrong but I have since been vindicated.

I searched X5world but found little definitive information on a problem specific to the 3.0. However, I did find some concrete information from other sources on the web. So, to ensure that as many X5 owners as possible have access to the fix, I'm posting the solution that worked for me.

BMW issued a Service Measure bulletin for the Throttle response issue. For details look up service measure B12 204 04. The DME software needs to be updated.

Actions performed by the service department:

1214710 Programming DME data status
WT Followed B1220404 and programmed DME with CD38

It made a HUGE difference in the drivability of the car. I only wish the dealer in San Diego where the car was purchased had been more responsive. The upgrade was performed by Moritz in Arlington and they were very helpful.

Hope this helps.
