I had the XM Direct retrofit on my '03 530i and plan to go that route soon in my '04 X5. If you have a Sirius-ready setup, it's a seamless and easy way to get XM if you prefer it over Sirius (which I do, personally speaking). Tom's/EAS' pricing and BMW/product knowledge makes this choice a no-brainer in my book.
I thought the coolest feature was how the display would initially read "Sirius", then quickly followed by "XM Radio". Truly first-class work on integration into the BMW system.
By the way, even if you happen to be technically challenged, you can easily install the XM Direct unit into an X5's CD changer wiring harness, run the wiring for the antenna, and initiate your XM subscription via phone or internet in about 20-30 minutes. Highly recommended.
