Wearing winter shoes.
Got my winter wheels/tires mounted this morning. Based on all the recommendations I went with the scorpion ice & snows. I actually got a staggered set so I could re-use some old wheels I had (staggered 17" style 68s)... Here she is before and after... 235/65s front and 255/60s rear.
before, Michelin MXV4s 18s http://static.flickr.com/121/293910440_fc3abc7f1b.jpg after, wearing winter shoes: http://static.flickr.com/111/293910315_6d1d72fb5f.jpg Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow, staggered 17s, on style 68 (which barely cleared the brake calipers) |
Looks great for the winter! Did you feel any change in handling/ driving after you put the 17s on?

yup
Thanks! The ride is much softer than the SP Michelins, with a tad more roll through the corners... Since it's been raining here for the last few weeks I've noticed that the Michelin's are pretty bad in wet weather. They're fine for highway/summer driving, but on a crappy weather morning in addition to all the leaves rotting in the streets it's very easy to slip & slide around or trigger the ABS. Immediately with the Scorpions I noticed more grip in the wet (it's been raining all night/day today) and the softer ride... Previously the winter wheels had a set of BFGoodrich KDW 2s that were excellent for wet-weather when I had my z3, they may just be the tire I get to replace the Michelins once they're done and now that I have a dedicated winter setup.

I dread putting my winter set up back on. The weather has been great so far considering it's mid November, 65 degrees today, not really incentive to take off the 19s.

Barry,
Its got nothing to do with you. Just felt like turnaround was fair play. But I agree its getting old. Blue. |
As a fellow "Seattleite" I've also added Scorpion Ice and Snows to my X5, but on the X5 19" Sport rims (I'm going to buy new summer rims next year).
The ride is *much* softer than my previous 19" Diamaris tires, with improved grip on the winter wet roads, and incredible traction on the run up to the mountains to ski. It's not exactly "wintery" here in Seattle - but I'm very pleased with the look of the tires (19" as nature intended on the 4.4 Sport!) and the traction in both rain and ice. I'd highly recommend them... |
