Transmission problem

While driving today I noticed my transmission will not go above 3rd gear, I tried to mannualy put it in 4th but it would not go. Does it sound like I'm going to need a new transmission? What do transmissions cost for these cars?

Thanks for the help

eurogreek1 11-12-2006 08:06 PM

I just changed my transmission out two weeks ago and it cost about $5500. Thank God for my extended warrenty. With the new one, I have an additional two year warrenty. As far as your problem goes, I don't know. Mine never went into reverse.

chubyball 11-12-2006 08:42 PM

what is the deductible on that $5.5K?

FiveOGirl 11-12-2006 10:35 PM

$5500 well that sucks. How much would it cost to have the tranny rebuilt?

Do a search for a post by KewlX5 who went through transmission replacement/rebuild hell. He got it sorted out though. There might be some info in that thread that will help you.

do yourself a favor and have the BMW dealer check it out . if bmw does the work and you have problems afterwards, you have a big dealer to work with instead of a small shop.
just my 2Cents...

Call Peter Schmid Transmission, They will fix you up. They specialize in BMW and Mercedes trans and have been around for at least 20 years. They are by far the best in the bay area, they usually just do the rebuilding for other shops but the will also do the complete job if you like. 3rd gear seems to be the one that fails on these transmissions, it's no 5500.00 dollar job, but it wont be cheap to get it fixed right.

I can't recommend them high enough, I have been sending people there for 15 years.

I agree with you....BUT, Peter Schmid may only deal with ZF tranny and NOT with GM tranny. So if you have a X5 4.4i or 4.6iS or 4.8iS, the auto tranny is made by ZF.

However, if you have a X5 3.0i, then your auto tranny is made by GM which Peter Schmid may or may not be able to help you.

Good luck.

Check with http://www.bmrparts.com to see if they have any rebuilt transmissions you can swap in.

How many miles on your X? Is it a 4.4L or 3.0L engine?

I should have mentioned the GM trannys, YES they rebuild GM transmissions as well, I dont think they have the factory authorized support as with ZF, but they have rebuild GM trannys for people I know as recently as last month. That was an early 528 with a GM tranny with 125k, 3rd grear drum was shot.

Is your SES or transmission light on? or has it been on recently?

EKS PYB 11-14-2006 12:18 PM

whoah...you mean to say my 3.0 has a GM Tranny in it? but why? why people...tell me why?

i made a vow to myself never buy american cars anymore after 3 american cars in the past 12 years...main problems i had with all of them, of course...TRANSMISSION!

hell0 11-14-2006 12:35 PM

It's a European transmission made in France, has nothing to do with the American division.

Many BMW's have GM trannys, nothing to worry about, they are some of the best transmission around. For such a complex system people seem to expect them to last forever. Anything over 100K is extra life IMO out of any automatic trans. BMW trans regularly go to 150-200k with zero service. I have a 165k e36 that is shifting like the day it was made.

EKS PYB 11-14-2006 01:35 PM

wheeeeeeeeeew....i thought there for a moment i have to get rid of my X5 within 3 years just like the others i had in the past.

that's good to hear...very comforting! after all, i'm no speed demon like most of you guys are

eurogreek1 11-14-2006 07:43 PM

I had no deductable with my trans replacement. Thank god for the warrenty I bought. Everyone knows that dealers rip people off. I just took it there because of the warrenty.
