Key Activation

So I go to my local BMW dealer and they want to charge me $102 to activate the keys so the seat memory etc. will work with different keys. I guess looking thru the threads this has to be done by the dealer?

Seems a little excessive?

If U've had the keys cut there, it should be done 2 free. It litterally takes them 30 seconds. I just had one done last week cuz i lost my spare and ordered a new one. I picked it up Friday it was turning ignition on but wouldn't open or close the doors. I went back monday and they did it while I was sitting in the car. I honestly wasn't paying attention (sorry) but it was a matter of seconds turning the ignition on and off.
Go talk to your service advisor.

I should have said I just purchased the X5 used. Looks like the original owner never had the keys activated either becuase they don't do anything. The service advisor did say it was more than a two minute job.

Guess I'm lucky because my dealer didn't charge me anything to set my 4 keys (M3 and X5).:)

Doesn't matter it was bought used or new, Keys deactivated even after being stored away for a long time.
This is a courtesy that every dealer should offer, go to another one but if you spent one dollar 4 this, it means they F&2...ck over, just my .02 cents.

I agree. I have spent over $300 there in a week with new mats, filters and a lube job on my 325xi. I'm going to try my service guy again.

This is normal for the dealership to charge for this service (Car Key Memory). You get one free program when you purchase the car and that is it.

Thanks for the comments....I agree the dealer should do it as a courtesy...but. At least the keys lock and unlock the car and start the car! Based on some readings I should be happy!!

I was at the dealer last friday and had a new spare key sent to me because the other dealer gave me the wrong set of spares...

the lady SA just sat in my car closed the door turned ignition to 1 then turned off , pressed buttons on the spare and every button works within less than 30 seconds she did that.

I actually printed this:

just to make sure if they gave me problems and won't do it for free but they did so I didn't have to program it myself.
