Paint Work
 

Last week I noticed a chip and small ding in my driver’s side rear door. I got an estimate from the high end shop the BMW dealer uses. The shop claims 99.9% color match for titanium silver. They also claim it’s one of the easiest colors to do. They want to remove both doors, repair ding, spot paint titanium silver on front and rear door and clear coat both doors. They clain you wont see the spot paint after doors are clear coated. All of the trim is removed from the doors so there is no taping. They also brush touch up the door hinge bolts if any paint is worn off during R&I.

Has anyone had any titanium silver paint work done? I don’t know if I should live with the ding (it’s the only one) or chance the paint and repair.

Seems like a lot of messin w/your ride for a door ding...why not paintless dent removal? And why the heck do they need to remove the doors????? NO way! My brother owns a large body shop so I've seen a ton of work on high end cars...there's no need to remove the doors for any sort of "ding". Sounds like a lot of $$$$ and BS tto me. I'd get another opinion. Good luck.

The ding is approximately two inches from the front of the door where it is very narrow. I was told paintless could not be done, because they can’t get the rods in.

I am just curious if anyone has had paint work done on titanium silver and how it turned out.

Do you have a pic of the ding? r u sure it cannot be fix by a dent remover specialist with no paint job? I got few dings fixed on my X last year that way.
The guy did a fantatic job. I was also told by the dealer that it needed a paint job.

Try Dentmasters first. With a ding near the door edge, on my brand X, the tech drilled a hole behind the door gasket. The dent was fixed, the hole was plugged and the repair was invisable.

Total cost $50!

I had a similar door ding fixed on my '03 E65 with titanium silver, and you can't tell it was repainted, even in bright sunlight. If they blend the paint correctly and re-clearcoat everything, it will look new again. Just make sure they mask everyhting off so you don't get overspary on the rest of the car. Paintless dent repair is great if there is no significant paint damage to fix, but mine had a deep chip in the dent.

If you need serious paint work and your in PA there is only one shop...Karosserie. They are one of the best in the WORLD let alone PA or the US. They used to handle all of Ferrari's paint work in the US (all cars that came into the US with paint imperfections would go to them). Back in the late 80's we had a BMWCCA meeting there and the cars in there for repair at one time blew my mind (4 Lamborghinis, 8 Ferraris, dozens of BMWs, Porsches...) They have painted a few of my cars and the work is flawless!

I have two titanium silver BMW's, one is a 1999 328is and the other a 2001 x5. Over the past few years I have had paint work and paintless dent removal done, and PDR is the way to go. In most cases, when they paint, they have to blend into the panel next to it. A good example was when I had the hood replaced on the 328IS (rust on the seem) - they had to paint both fenders and the header panel to the paint to match. Also, painting in so much more expensive. Recently, my wife parked to close to the utlity rack in the garage, when the passenger got out they hit the rack and over it tumble, leaving behind 6 good size dents on the passenger fender, roof and quarter panel. The biggest dent was about the size of a lemon on the top of the fender. I brought it to the local BMW dealer and they quoted $3000 to fix the damag. Having good success with PDR on my x5, I called Factory Finish in Natick MA., they were able to fix 99% of the damage for $300. If you stare long and hard you can find the other 1% but for the money, you can't beat it. Also, there was no worries about the paint matching, which was the problem I had when they replaced the hood - took them 3 times to get it to match - car was in the shop for 3 weeks.

Thanks for the info. I had another BMW dealer (Thompson BMW) look at my car and they did PDR for $90.
It looks GREAT, can’t tell there was a dent in the door.
