2001 X5 SES Light On
I just bought a 2001 X5 and right after I put gas for the 1st time, the Service Engine Soon 'SES' light came on and has been there ever since. I have done the following so far;
1. Oil Change 2. Gas Tank Cap Replaced with new cap from BMW I also took it to a mechanic who diagnosed it with an error code 0443 or 98 (essentially same thing). Can anyone help me please. |
Is that new gas cap sealing well. Usually first thing to rule out...

It doesnt seem air-tight but i guess it's fine.

Many posts on this.

I saw the posting from everyone else, Thanks. Maybe I should try another cap.

Harry,
I have the same issue back in May and since it's under warranty they replace it the new cap and they remind me to remove the key in the ignition every time you fill up gas. |
i haven't had that problem yet. although, i do make sure i hear or feel one click every time i put the cap back on.

Replacing the cap was the very first thing i did but nothing changed so today I took it to the dealer I bought it from and since I had paid some money to get it completely checked when I bought it, they had given me a 14day guarantee that if anything goes bad I could bring it back and they would fix it. Let's see what happens now. I'm keeping my fingures crossed.

You just bought the '01. I, also, have an '01.
The key is not to pinch the gas cap wire. Make sure it's free. Mileage? Water pump gives out between 60K-80K 4.6? 4.4? 3.0? 3.0, there are aftermarket waterpumps with stainless steel impellers vs BMW plastic (4.6 & 4.4 we're stuck with BMW, as far as I know) 4.4? check the 2 hoses in the back of the engine (approx 1 1/8" dia) If they flex easily and feel thin, replace them. Have the control arms checked for looseness. My '01 a/c fan was not shutting off with the ignition. 2nd stage resistor also a typical problem. 5+yrs old - new battery? what service has been done to it? Brakes? Most (and I do mean MOST) of my lightbulbs/sockets burned out between 50-53K. After 5 separate "check ____ light", I told them to replace them all at the sixth warning light. I still have one original foglight and one headlight, the rest have been changed. Check your rear license plt lights. If there is corrosion, the rear latch assy is leaking. If you replace this ($230), it also may cure the problem of the rear hatch, which often unlatches in early models. At least, it did for me. Fortunately, I have a great dealer in Idaho Falls,ID and had them go over it "head to toe" when installing the Dinan S2 upgrade to "weed out" anything questionable after 2 owners and 42K miles. This is the website to be at to have your questions answered about your X5. I hope you have as much fun with it as I do with mine. |
