Did you check the oil level? ;)
Is it in range on teh dipstck?
BMW's burn some oil and need a top up from time to time.

That means check you oil level :) Check it out and see if it is low. The oil sensor is very sensitive on mine and from time to time I get this message too. The first time it happened I had the oil sensor changed but that did not fix the problem. I do not worry anymore when it shows as long as I know I am not low in oil. It is one of these electronic gremlins that the X is known for.

didnt check the level it was dark and lighting is pretty poor where i park. I'll check when its light out but just wanted to know what gives. it was also cold maybe that can play a role?
