P0412 oxygen sensor?

P0412 Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve A Circuit Malfunction
listed under emissions codes

my guess oxygen sensor
anyone else have that before?

The Cleaner 11-22-2006 10:13 PM

Sounds more like the air pump shut off valve to me. O2 sensors usually show as P01 codes. Need Year and Engine size.

Eurosport 11-22-2006 11:54 PM

ok i'm pretty pissed right now,
i did more searching and found: P0412 code = An open or shorted condition detected in the secondary air (air switching/aspirator) solenoid control circuit.

so i check all hoses, took off airbox, the secondary air pump, blew in it, etc, all fine, i check the vaccum hose, all good, then i take the engine cover off, and suprise suprise
solenoid wires chewed!!! that f***** rat/mouse got in there again
there's new foam from engine cover freshly chewed (new color) from last time it happened, and looks like chewed the 2 wires going into the solenoid.
i'm pretty pissed (last time it was a vaccum line that got chewed, now this).

i better start parking in the garage at night, warm engine, cold weather, attractive for rats/mouse
time for some poison, grrrrr

The Cleaner 11-23-2006 02:27 AM

hehe I would not have guessed that one. Glad you found it.

rayxi 11-23-2006 02:32 PM

What's the OBD II P-code for rodent damage?
Glad to hear you found the problem. You need this BMW retrofit: 82 10 9 416 945 Marten Repeller Retrofit. It's for an E46 but I'm sure you could make it fit an X5.

Eurosport 11-23-2006 03:46 PM

thanks Rayxi, i remember now where i saw the kit, on e46 boards, but who would have thought it'd actually happen in real life hah
lol thats funny retrofit, i will definitely have to check that out
because whatever roddent is there might still be around
my rottweiller was going around the car last night sniffing at the wheels,
there was definitely something there he kept going in circles around the car looking for it lol

here's my enemy lol

i really doubt anyone has ever had this happen to them but who knows at least there'll be a post about it for future reference

Eurosport 11-23-2006 08:17 PM

omg i think i'm gonna have a nervous breakdown lol

i go check top of engine again, take off cover and look what i find today

time to empty the rat killer shelf on any store that i see
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr rr

rayxi 11-24-2006 02:07 AM

That sucks! Calls for some rat poison. Putting it in the engine bay should ensure no neighborhood cats or dogs get at it.

Eurosport 11-27-2006 02:37 PM

lol it's war now, i ordered traps, poison, and more traps

Diamond Dave 11-27-2006 03:45 PM

Wow, what a bummer but good that you found it. At least it's somewhat easy to replace/fix.

I recall rats getting into the engine bay of an old Mercedes 280E that my parents used to own. Bastards would hang out in there during the winter to get warm. In addition to chewing spark plug wires, those damn rodents would hoard dog food from our family pet in the spark plug holes on top of the engine! A real mess all around. Dooohhhh!

Thanks for sharing the pics as well. Best of luck in future!!!

noncom23 11-27-2006 03:55 PM

Put out Warfarin! Get it at the local hardware stores.

Eurosport 12-08-2006 02:20 PM

Update: could it have been a squirrel? not a rat

because i got lots of traps out for a few days, poison, haven't caught a rat yet.
but
included with all the traps i got, they sent me couple squirrel traps too since i wanted them as well
there's been this squirrel which last couple months each morning would come to our outdoor swing and start chewing on it, and taking out the foam filling.
now it makes me wonder, could it have been the squirrel that got in the engine and ate the foam and wires, since it's hair is same color as the damn rat too.
btw i've owned 2 squirrels in 2 days in these traps lol
thing that sucks, you have to drive at least 5 miles and let them go, so they can't find their way back to you lol
now i'm still trying to catch a rat
it's kinda funny by now, my engine cover will always always bring a smile

Err, you take them for a car ride then let them go?

Eurosport 12-08-2006 02:42 PM

ya lol it's a cage trap, so once they get in door closes behind them and they are stuck in the cage, have to take them for a ride lol to let them go in the wild again heh

supersteve 12-08-2006 05:48 PM

FOR MY 2001 BMW X5 4.4i) YESTERDAY, I JUST CHANGED MY OIL AND SPARK PLUG, FRESH ANTIFREEZE/COOLANT GENIUN BMW BUT UNFORTUNATELY I'M STILL GETTING THIS STUPID ERROR CODE: (P0412) WHICH IS STATED AS: secondary air injectin system switching valve A circuit malfunction. WITH MY SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT ON, DRIVES ME CRASY, AND UNABLE TO PASS THROUGH STATE INSPECTION WITH THIS CAR.
