Windshield Wipers?

Does anyone know why on some newer model Bimmers only one of the windshield wipers has an extra black piece? It's attached to the left windshield wiper and basically looks like it should go on both sides, but doesn't.

I really have not noticed - I'm waiting for the wipers to wear out so I can replace them with Bosch Icons, which work great on my '01

What are the Bosch Icons? I haven't heard of that brand/type of wiper. What's the deal with them?

AzNMpower32 12-02-2006 11:32 PM

They're the flat, newer kinds where there's no metal blade attached to the rubber. It's just one flat piece of rubber and it's showing up as OEM on many new cars. (The wiper arm is still metal of course, but the blade is all rubber).

Isn't that a wind deflector?

Yes it is, only needed on the drivers side for visibility

Wagner 12-03-2006 03:10 PM

I forces the wiper to the window, only the drivers side requires it.

Thanks I was wondering about this too, I guess I need some wrench to just remove it and place it on the new wiper blade, or get the insert.

Islands52 01-10-2008 02:21 AM

The wind deflector is screwed on with two screws (torx iirc), if you want to keep it, you will need to get wiper refills. they did not fit on the Bosch Micro Edge blades I bought, and I assume they will be hit or miss with other wipers.

I don't find it necessary, but then I don't normally drive at speeds above 75mph, and never in the rain.

I just put the Icons on, and am very happy with the results.

yesterday I just replaced my OEM wipers with Bosh AeroTwin series (the same Icon model, I suppose). I was surprised that my driver's wiper does't wipe a whole bunch of ice and snow just before my face :( and passenger's wipe do not lie to the glass just about 2 sm from the right side... What can be wrong with wipers/me/wiper arms ?

You need to break off the tabs on your wiper arm.

nwizard 01-15-2008 03:31 AM

What the tabs do you mean ? A support for ordinary wipers ?

Wiper blade guide, wiper arm

Part number: 61 61 7 030 264

????

you have an x5 sav and you dont drive above 75mph and never in the rain?

sounds like you can do with a convertible instead :)

It's that little "U" shaped guide on the wiper arm. Grab some pliers and pull it out. It will work perfectly once you do that.

nwizard 01-16-2008 07:09 AM

ok, thanks, Michelle ! I'll try to do it ! Can this "U" guide be putted back if I would like to switch back to ordinary wipers ? :) Or this is "one-way surgery" ? :)

One way surgery. But, trust me, you will NOT want to go back to ordinary wipers. It'd be like going from Jessica Simpson to Britney Spears.
