Slippin' n Slidin' X5

Hello all, Somewhat a Newbie here..
Bought my X about a month or so ago, luv the growling ride. Always had a thing for them, but just never got around to buying one till now. Anyways, mine 03' came with 'Federal' tires (never heard of them before), which by the way look very hot, but not so hot on the road filled with snow. I almost went into a car yesterday, driving only about 5 mph. I mean i had no traction wherever there was snow. I guess tires do make a tons of difference even with all the traction controls and AWD 24/7 thing. And there's alot more snow to come this season. Any thoughts on what tire would perform best in winter?

If you're looking for an all-season tire that performs well in every category, I don't think you can do better than the Pirelli Scropion Zero. If you want to maximize winter traction, look into getting a set of 18" wheels with winter tires.

DesiBaba,
Federal is a relatively new, (to North American mkt), tire
mfg'er based in Taiwan.

No knowledge or exp with their tires...
As the Mr Vinuneuro said above, many have reported
good all season use with the P Scrop Zeros.

Or, dedicated, higher profile snows on other wheels or,
pack some dedicated snows on your current X.

With snow tires, it will drive like a completely diff. car,
traction-wise.
And, Welcome to TheBoard.

Yeah, up in Wisconsin you definitely need a winter setup with snow tires on 17" or 18" wheels - I went 17" star spoke 130s with Pirelli snow & ice - I'm not a big fan of allseason tires, but that's another way to go if you don't have a sport setup - You will get plenty of opinions here on which is best - Safe driving and good luck
