Cv Joint Boot Tear?
I have a 2000 x5 4.4 CV joint boot with a tear in it (drivers side front) it seems like you have to do alot of work to just replace it from looking at it. Is it most likey i just ned to repalce the boot and not have to replace the CV joint wit it?
It seems that it just happened, I noticed the grease all over the wheel. thanks mark |
Just replace the rubber boot on both sides. It'll save you the time not having to return to the shop to replace the passenger side later. It'll cost anywhere between 250 to 300 per side. It's a common problem with the X5.

Ok thanks, how about getting the part? Is it best to use the origional part or are there any aftermarket parts that might be better?
I saw this on ebay anyone ever use them? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-X...spagenameZWDVW thanks fr any info. mark |
Ebay is fine. BMW cut corners putting this X in production. I recently had both fronts CV boots replaced. 2000 4.4 X5. You install yourself? If so good. If not, hope you have aftermarket warranty for this and future service parts. Could get costly. Common X5 problems are:
CV Boots Radiator Hoses Control Arms Window Regulators Final Stage Resistor Cluster Display |
And:
Water Pumps Thermostats Control Arms Ball Joints Electronic Modules Cam Sensors Batteries Door Lock Actuators Rear Light Units Among others! |
EMPI boots are very nice, they use a more elastic rubber than the OE GKN boots (or as the Germans call them GATORS).

Hey Zulu,
Should I change my thermostat and pump if I replace all my radiator hoses? |
Hey thanks bkran, the cleaner, and zula95, I guess it would be a god idea to replace both the boots on the one side since they will have it all apart.(there are 2 per side right)
And damn i hav already replaced one window regulator which was not so bad with the instruction from the site. I am just not sure i want to tackle the cv boots. Now you got me thinking i should sell this thing with all those potential problems you guys listed shitttttttttttt!!!!!!!!!!! Really its not mine it is the wifes, lol. Actually i want something bigger since we know have a kid and soon to have another. mark |

BTW nine out of ten times it's only the front outer left boot which goes bad. I know its good practice to replace stuff at the same time but com'on who's had any of the other cv boots go bad on their X lately? |
