Bosch Icons Installed! PICS!

I picked up Bosch Icon wiper blades yesterday, bought the metal rear wiper arm from my local dealer this morning (also checked out an E70 while we were there!), and installed everything in under 3 minutes!

They are awesome! I cannot wait for some snow!

Here are pictures after the install!

Almost four years later, I replaced this set of Bosch Icon wipers yesterday. They were starting to get a little smeary, so I figured it was time.

I replaced them with new Icons and it is raining cats and dogs today, so I replaced them just in time! :)

Michelle 10-14-2010 10:56 AM

BTW - I'm not sure if this is a national sale, but I got them at Advance Auto Parts for "Buy 1 Get 1 50% off!" :)

Lookin4Trouble 10-14-2010 01:06 PM

Weird. I picked up Rain-X wipers all around, ended up returning the driver side wiper to replace with a Bosch Icon, and it's having the same problem - leaves a big spot in the middle of the windshield where the curve of the blade lifts the blade well above the glass. Anyone know why this might happen? And maybe how to fix it, too?

As posted MANY MANY MANY times on this forum... AND even on the Bosch website, you have to snap off the metal tab on the wiper arm. :stickpoke

Quicksilver 10-14-2010 02:38 PM

.... Thanks for the reminder Michelle. Going out to get a set today
If this is an E-53 install what was the stock number?

Yii 10-14-2010 02:55 PM

My local autozone don't carry Bosch Icon's:( but my rain x have them holding up okay for about a year now:thumbup:

StartX5 10-14-2010 03:05 PM

Yii, it's from Advance Auto Parts, not Autozone :)

Michelle 10-14-2010 03:07 PM

Barry - Yes... on my E53. I got 424A for the driver's side and 422B for the passenger's side.

Yii - Go here: Where To Buy, enter your zip code, and look for stores that sell the Icon blades.

StartX5 10-14-2010 03:13 PM

Michelle, did you buy driver and passenger metal wiper arm as well or just the one in the back?

chefwong 10-14-2010 03:19 PM

Dunno if you have Autozone around you QuickSilver...but oftentimes, there is a BOGO offer on these things...

Just the rear. No need to buy anything else.

Headed out to give it a look see in a few.

Yep they have them but the ones I need are "NOT" on sale
at that store. That was a crazy store though. They were playing
some disgusting Rapp music...... :( I had to leave.

Got them this evening since my current wipers blades are not working good. Advance Auto Parts on sale these Bosch Icon wipers: Buy 1 get 1 50% off. Got 3 of them 424A, 422B and 418A (rear) for $43.00 and finished them in 5 minutes.

Yii 10-16-2010 12:11 AM

o man lol i read advanced auto parts as autozone rofl my mind just condensed it and spit that out.

Brit6 10-16-2010 02:16 PM

The bosch icons do not fit on the old plastic rear wiper arm. You need to buy the updated metal rear wiper arm :)

Once the weather turns here, I may have to do this "mod", but then again that is when I drive the Blazer most of the time, so I can the miles off the X.

StartX5 10-17-2010 11:20 PM

Just finished this mod during the weekend.

I hated mine when I had them. They would never perfectly contour to the windshield and consequently left big spots untouched. I ended up going back to regular blades. I even went so far as to get an airfoil for the passenger side blade (now both of them have one). The OE (bosch micro edge excel) blades work better than Icons IMO, esp with the airfoil on the passenger side blade.

Silly, the Icons destroyed the factory blades as far as performance and noise is concerned and lasted twice as long as the original blades. I have had two sets so far in almost 4 years. There is a one inch portion where the resting blade doesn't hit the window on the far right passenger side, but when the wipers are turned on, it does hit the window. They are much, much better than stock and there is no need to have the spoiler on each blade as it is built-in.

In your case maybe. I had 1 and 2 inch sections that werent touching, smack in the middle of the drivers blade and on the edge of the passenger blade (as yours was). When at speed, the passenger one isnt so important but the driver one is annoying and dangerous.

For sure they win on noise, but dont really perform any better (in the sections that touch the windsheild) than the micro edge excel blades in a FL downpour. With the stock blades, adding the second spoiler vastly improves the perf of the passenger blade (but makes it a touch noisy).

Are you 100% sure you had the right size blades?

Mine are way better than stock as far as visibility and performance are concerned.

100% sure. 424A (driver) and 422B (pass). I use rain-x, maybe that's why they dont seem to make much of a difference.

FSETH 10-19-2010 12:56 AM

Also, are you sure you installed them correctly? See this thread. Especially Statdoc's post #13.

They didnt sit right even after I pulled the tab out. Maybe my blade got bent permanently. Perhaps once these die, I'll give them another shot.

neockder 10-19-2010 03:22 AM

Well glad all that is sorted! Funny... I put Icons on, on Friday and was pretty upset.

Now that i've read and heard about this 'metal section' to snap off; i'm pumped :D

Can't wait for some rain/snow to give em a shot, and snap tat metal off!

Quicksilver 10-19-2010 07:28 AM

There is no 'metal section' to snap off.
It's a plastic clip on the wiper arm.

StartX5 10-19-2010 08:40 AM

What's happened?:) I installed mine last weekend and i was testing right away with water pouring down lol. Icons work great and quiet. My OEM wipers are bad and it's time to switch to BI. happy with them so far.:)

admranger 10-19-2010 10:54 AM

Timely. I need new wipers and the last BMW inserts I had put in under BMW extended maintenance (I didn't buy it, previous owner did!) lasted, ummm, two months! The stock ones suck so I'm going to get some icons this weekend.

ekimv65 10-21-2010 09:23 PM

Just ordered the Bosch's for the front, do they make one for the rear and if so, anyone have a part #? If not, what is a good replacement?

Thank.s

I think they do make the right size, but I never understood why people use icons on the rear. It has a spoiler that doesn't make any sense on the rear window. Also, the refill blades are only like a dollar or something from the dealer.

I don't even USE my rear wiper! BUT I changed it to the Bosch Icon to match the Bosch Icons on the front! :loco:

Brit6 10-22-2010 12:54 PM

The stock wiper are garbage in the snow. I used the 418B Bosch Icon and i love it on the X, works a lot better.

I think people are going with the 421B on the passenger side, it seems to have worked better for them being a little shorter.

The only way the 421B blade "works better" is that it eliminates the slight overhang when in the rest position that the 422B has. I stuck with the 422B when I got new Icons last week because I didn't want the wiper to wipe an in less all across the windshield. I'll take a slight overhang for the extra inch.

Brit6 10-22-2010 03:34 PM

Ya the 421B actually tucks down just under the top of the hood, it looks cleaner for sure!

It's only less on the passenger side so you don't really see it.

Personal preference i guess :)

Finally figured out what everyone was saying about the tab

It's a _PLASTIC_ tab, attached to the _METAL_ wiper arm that needs removed, NOT a metal tab attached to the replacement blade as I (mis?)read in other posts

(saved in case I ever decide to go back to stock wipers, not likely at $80+ at the stealership)

See attached diagram from realoem, part number 8.

Installed ICONS this weekend. Love them on the front but having problems with the back wiper. Removed the old one that only covered the lower half of the window. With the ICON, it misses the top center of the window (no clips or anything to remove). Wonder if the metal wiper assembly is bent.

Brit6 11-15-2010 02:05 PM

Hrm wierd, your using the 418B blade?

Yeah...418B. It's almost like the problem others have mentioned when they forgot to remove the plastic clips. When I push the arm down I can see a visible void in the center of the blade as opposed to it being flush against the window. Not sure if there's enough pressure (i.e. maybe the spring is worn). I don't know, I'm reaching I guess.

And you're sure you have the metal rear wiper arm? If the spring is worn, may be time to R&R

Yeah, it's the metal one. I'm alright with replacing it, just seems like I should be able to do something to get it to work right. Thx.

TheGodfather 11-15-2010 09:49 PM

My Bosch Icons have performed very poorly for me.

My newest set started streaking just 2ish months after I installed them. The Blades seem to be degrading somehow.

At first I chalked it up to damaged from the pressure washer...but this doesn't make sense really, as the streaking is thin and more pressure point looking.

Maybe my windshield is just too old and not glassy anymore.

Anyway, they were great the first month.

Brit6 11-18-2010 10:29 AM

Very strange, maybe try to replace the arm, its pretty inexpensive (~$30)

m5james 11-20-2010 11:27 PM

Is anyone else having issues with the Icons? Winter is basically here and I'll be using the wipers again, so I'd like to know if it's worth spending almost $50 on wiper blades.

admranger 11-23-2010 05:34 PM

I just put a set on so I don't have enough data to comment. I'm sure that after my cross-country drive starting in a week I'll likely have something to comment on! Installation was easy. Oddly, there didn't appear to be any clip on my wiper arm to remove. I just took the old, stock blade off and put the new one on the driver's side and it worked perfectly, cleaning off a lot of crud the first time I used it.

mendes9 12-22-2012 11:30 AM

Here is what you remove.. been bothering me for months... finally got to me and had to fix it. This is what you remove.

Just picked these up for all 3 wipers. Rear works great. Big hole in the drivers side sweep and the passenger makes such a racquet when changing directions. Went and bought replacements from the dealer. Much better.
