Please explain Adaptive Headlights
I have a 2005 X5 3.0. My adapative headlights only turn to the right. They do not move to the left. The owners manuel makes reference that they won't turn left because they could blind oncoming traffic. A freind says that his lights turn both ways. What is correct?? Thanks

They shouldn't turn to the left, the manual is right (shocker) :)
You will also notice that your drivers side has a different 'angle' then the passenger, so as to not blind oncoming drivers. |
i know my mom's 2006 750Li has the adaptive headlights and they turn both ways.

At a standstill, the headlights will only swivel to the right. In reverse OR when you manually turn the headlights to the low-beam position (not using auto-headlights), the adaptive function does not work.
If you are moving along at a decent clip, the headlights should swivel left and right depending on steering angle and vehicle speed. It may not swivel as far to the left because supposedly there is a risk of blinding oncoming traffic (whether this is true or not I haven't verified). |
For my 2004, they turn both left and right. A lot more to the right though. They turn both directions even when the car is in park. The do not turn when in reverse. Here is the video:

At a dead stop, will the lights turn left? |
For me, yes. Others? They may have added a safety stop in later models?
|
Mine actually turn both ways.

Cool clip there.
