Advise on X5 purchase
I'm looking for a 01 to 03 X5 4.4.
What I wanted to know is the importance of option packages. I would like the navi package as well as sport package but I've found some X5's without the sport package. Would I be better off just getting a nav package and adding 20" wheels to complete the package? Thanks John |
I think sport package is the real deal. It's not just wheels, its the 3-spoke steering wheel, sport seats (Which are great), and the sport suspension. Of course if you never drive aggressively, you'd think the X5 handles well even without the sport pack. But if you relish throwing a 2.5 ton SUV (SAV) into a corner and pushing it to its absolute limits......the sport pack is a must. Plus it controls all of that V8 power a bit better!

Trust me I have had 3 BMW"S all with the sport package. It is totally worth it IMO...
|
So what you are saying is forget the nav package and go with the sport package>
That way I'll have a lot of fun not finding the place where I'm going!!!! hahahahaah!!!!! |
I agree!!!! BMW is known for its handling! Sport is definitely a MUST. Keep looking around....Im sure you'll be able to find both a sport and Nav package for a decent price! Whats your budget by the way?????
|
I'd like to pay about $30k for an 03.
I've found an 04 CPO for $33 but I don't know the options on it yet! John |
Sport Package is a must
Navigation is so-so. You can always upgrade to better navigation systems later and the X5 looks good with or without navigation. If you plan on getting a 2003 , you cannot upgrade your headlights without buying new ones (angel eyes). |

By the way, I ended up paying $28,500 but I had 58,000 miles on the car. I got it last week. Hope this helps. |
I'm getting closer on this purchase and was wondering about aftermarket warranty.
Is it worth it and if so would you purchase the power train only vs. bumper to bumper? John |
I got aftermarket warranty and I would highly recommend it.
Transmission failure alone is 5k Mine was 2.5k for 36,000 miles 3 years. |
just be patient to find the right car with ALL the options you want, that way you won't have to update this and update that down the road, as well as you'll find them at better price as time goes on of course
but really sport package a must, nav is good, even though is not the touchscreen acura type, it's very helpful |
There's a couple CPO at my dealership with sport pack. An '03 auto goin for $33k and an '04 manual goin for $36k.

utdeveloper... Do not think the Pioneer AVIC-Z1 will go in the x5.
Have you checked with Pioneer? |
Correct me if I'm wrong but the sport package would include,
1. sport rims 19" 2. Sport steering wheel 3 spoke 3. sport seats 4. sport suspension 5. larger brakes? Did I miss something? John |

nice.. now you got me wanting one... bye, bye tax return
|
I would get one with the nav pack because its allways better having the standard nav rather than some crappy fitting aftermarket nav. If you are a big man the sport seats will hurt your sides because they stick into you. I would get the nav kit and add some wheels and some better suspension if you would like.

1. As above sports alloys (V-spoke style 63 5 spoke 10 J x 19 ") with extra wide tyres 255/50 R10 front & 285/45 R19 rears. 2. 3 spoke sports steering wheel (as above) multi function. 3. As above Sports seats, (electric front seats with driver memory). 4. As above Sport suspension) 5. Anthracite headlining 6. Clear indicator lenses 7. De- chroming 8. Titanium Line Interior trim, ( dark or light poplar zero cost option if selected by first purchaser) 9. Black chrome tailpipes, (certainly on the 4.4is) As stated - there was no brake upgrade, (as previous point 5) The UK NAV pack marketed as the "Communications Pack "consisted of : 1. GSM phone ( in the UK this was initially a BMW firmwared Motorola V50 - the firmware of which ensures the phone does not drain the battery if the phone is left plugged into the cradl (later cars came with bluetooth preperation) 2. Satelite Navigation system (DVD optical drive w.e.f 2003) 3. OBM ( minitially 4:3 aspect ratio screen untill 4/01 when replaced by 16:9 splitscreen & widescreeen), incorporating TV ( initially analogue) and text. (the screen displayed all computer functions etc). Individual components could be selected from the comms pack which was officially all 3 of the above. The Phone option includes SMS text displays and address book functionality etc. I'm not trying to be clever or to rubbish other input but rather trying to help with accurate info.:) Above from my recollection and cross checked from UK info only- individual markets may vary. |

Johnny, I am looking to upgrade to a new X5 and would be willing to sell mine. It is an 01 with just under 90K miles, topaz blue, nav, phone, cold weather package, 6pack cd player, xenon headlights, front and rear heated seats, front and side airbags, PDC, Hill desent assist If you or anyone is interested, get back to me. Marc (los angeles, CA) |
Well its your own opinion. The aftermarket nav systems dont fit the type of the car. If you can get a pic of an x5 with an aftermarket nav system in the front and it looks good ill change my mind. But so far all i have seen are shonky aftermarket nav systems that dont fit in right.
Also do the aftermarket nav systems tell you all the specs about the car like range, outside temp, consump?? Quote:

I think it looks pretty good.. You other question is answered in this post as well. Keep in mind there is a newer version of the NAV with more options then the one in the post.

|

By the way, to the OP, unless the vehicle has a CD changer, the nav equipped X5s only come with a cassette player. (Who listens to those thesedays?!)

What CD changers are plug and play in the X5's that have only cassette players!
Would I be forced to stay with a BMW cd changer and is the wiring standard in the rear cargo bayfor the changer? Thanks John |
