new owner, a few questions
 

Hi,

just got a 01 X5 sport and had a couple minor questions. I tried bimmerforums but they weren't much help.

1. My buddy told me that X5's have a problem with some valve freezing in cold weather which winds up blowing the motor. I think he's full of sh*t becasue I haven't seen anything about this, and I can't find anything on the web. Has anyone heard of something like this? He keeps telling me I better not take it up to the mountains.

2. Everytime I turn the car off and restart the car, the seat loses the last saved setting and I have to press the saved memory button - is this normal? When I restart the seat moves into some unknown position. Most cars retain the last preference setting.

3. I tried to put a frame on the rear license plate bracket, but the screws aren't long enough to thread into the bracket - is it just me or is this lame. Do the dealer license plate frames come with longer screws?

4. Can the navigation software be upgraded? I don't mean just the mapping but the interface and usability.

2. The seat is set to move to one of the preset buttons. The dealer will/should correct it for you.

If you have time, you should be able to figure it out. There is some combination of holding either the unlock or lock button on the keyfob while pushing the number you want the key to operate.

Try it, if it doesn't work i'll take a look on my car...

4. Yes it can, there are many threads here on the software which can be upgraded to the latest version depending on what navigation computer you have.

#3 The screws fit for the license plate bracket provided your not putting on custom brackets. But yes they are long enough. Look closely and i believe that 2 of the four screws may be a bit longer than the others.

#4 Yes on the navi. Tons of upgrade info. just do a search

1) I have never heard about valve freezing on an X5 or any other car for that matter.
2) Try reprogramming the key as Quicksilver suggested. That should fix the problem.
3) Yes Nav can be upgraded to the latest version. Do a search of this board on both key reprogramming and nav upgrade

You got great answers, as for number one alpac and I agree I have never heard such a story, the 6 cylinder engines in the X5 has been around since 1992 in one form or another, the V8 goes back to 1995. I have never heard of it.

Lowpost - just to expand a little on the memory issue, there is an option where you can have the key programmed to a memory setting. What is happening is you are setting your adjustments in the car, but the next time you unlock the vehicle with that key, it is readjusting the settings to what the key was programmed for by the previous owner.

You will definitely have to have the key reprogrammed to keep your own personal settings.
