Removing Clutch fan Question
My alternator bearing is out so I'm in the process of installing a new alternator. I have my radiator out and I can't figure how to take the clutch fan off. The large nut behind the blades just spins. I'm also not sure if it is a standard thread or reverse thread. Any tips or tricks would be very helpful. It's a 2000 4.4 X5
Thanks |
I replaced my belts a few months ago...and the clutch fan is a reverse thread with a 32mm wrench....the hard part is keeping the blades from spinning when trying to unscrew it...I just got a long screw driver and wedged it between the 2 smaller bolt on the fan...bav auto sells a tool specifically for holding the fan in place..but a screwdriver should work fine..good luck

Ok, thanks. I'll give it a shot.

there is a special tool that holds the water pump pulley from moving so that you can remove the fan clutch. However, if you ask any BMW technician how they do it 9 out of 10 will tell you that they smack the wrench with a hammer to break it loose instead of using the tool. this is the easiest way to do it.
