error code P2187 P2189
hi, everyone, greetings from Texas.
mine is 03 4.4i SES light turned on one week ago when I just finished pumping gas. I originally thought it was caused by the cap. after one week, the light's still on, but everything else seems normal. then had the codes checked this morning, two showed up P2189 P2187. it says "system too lean at idle speed bank 1, bank 2". I did nothing but went ahead erased the codes. after the codes were erased, problems started. the engine quickly shut down after I turn it on. It appeared to have very low idle speed. I had to put the gas pad hard to keep the engine running. and at idel, the engine shakes alot, and the idel speed is low and unstable. can anyone give me some clue. how come the engine runs well before I erased the error codes, but run terribly afterwards. I hope the engine can come back to normal after running a while. thanks for your attention. Eric |
Is SES flashing? Do you have any hard data from the ECM or just a code?
Could be a bunch of things: MAF fuel pump bad gas clogged injector vacuum leak bad o2 etc. BTW, check the vacuum hoses at the rear of the engine. Did the shop fool with anything else under hood while you were getting the codes scanned? |
Sounds like MAF, the air intake boot has fallen off the throttle body or a huge vacuum leak.
Did you check your oil when you filled up? The dip stick is behind the air intake boot. It's possible you knocked it off checking the oil. The "too lean" means a intake/vacuum leak after the MAF and before the O2 sensors. For it to be on both banks narrows it down to between the MAF and the intake. The MAF knows how much air is going in and it tells the computer how much gas to put into the mixture. The O2 sensors confirm what is going on. If more air is going in than the MAF is saying the O2 sensors pick up a lean mixture. For both banks to be lean it has to be something that both banks have in common. . .MAF, air boot or vacuum leak. Additionally, the MAF would set it's own code. |
:xoutpost: Glad to have another Dallasite.
Anything more on your problem? |

yesterday the weather was cold, about 35F degree , so I guess that is why the car has problem on starting. I think even I did not earse the codes, the rough/low idle speed problem would still happen. anyway, yesterday I drove the car for about 10 minutes local road, and then tried to restarted it . The rough idle speed no longer occured, at least not noticable. I guess the cold weather caused the idle speed problem. I know the problem is still there, but I think I can drive the car for several days until the error codes show up again. Then I will bring my x5 to stealer. I appreciate you guys inputs. I DIY some on my previous maxima. I own this 03 X5 for about 6 months, current meter reads 52k miles. I'd better let the stealer fix the problem this time. Hey, Mike ( Noncom23), glad to see u here, which stealer you think is better, Classic BMW or BMW of Dallas? |

Classic. See Pat Arnold.

I brought my X5 to Classic BMW today, the problem they found was
three crank case vent hoses split up. they replaced three hoses and oil return, oil separa, several clamps, I have no idea about what are those parts. I guess those problems were caused by my driving too much locally. the total charge was $520, I paid $230, the rest is covered by the CPO and ESC. not bad. good thing was they loan me a BMW even I am not eligible for it, because my X5 is over 50k now, and it was not purchased from this dealer. The service advisor I deal with was Rocky Heuer, good guy.

Glad to hear it worked out OK. Yeah, Classic is loosening up on the loaner thing. Good luck.

I had SES light turned on 2005 4.4i immediately after I performed an intermittent oil change. Engine oil level I checked with my dip stick was low after 8.5 quarts of oil so I put one more quart but it didn't fix the problem. I took my X5 to the dealer and my service adviser told me SES is only to do with exhaust system. After the technician checked the error code, my adviser asked if I have been very low on gas and I said "never."
Still they concluded that at certain point my gas was so low it messed up engine firing order. They had to reset it and it was good to go. The interesting fact is during this period I was getting better gas mileage like +2MPG. |
you remind me one possible reason causing the problem in my 03 4.4i
I kept the gas low and always went to gas stations when the gas light turns on. but I only drove my x5 for about 8 months. I guess I need stop doing that. Quote:

after the repair, my X5 gets one MPG higher than before, and feel more powerful than before.

hi jhy311 et al,
This is my first post so any help would be appreciated. We live in Keller, Tx and have a '03 4.4i X5 with 60K miles. We have had an intermittent problem with SES LED. I took it to the nearby Autozone and the guy used the same Actron diagnostic to read. Only one error code P2189 showed up. He poked this same code into his computer and got the printout for me. The only problem is the printout says it is the OEM brand "Volkswagen". Obviously it is not the same mfgr. Should I get a second opinion or just disregard the printout? We do not have the same rough idle speed problem you described. |
Same..thing help

It happened to me x5 was running fine checked the codes came back with code p2187 -p2189 erased the code started the truck and it ran like Sh*&%t cut off just after starting and rough idle. Im too afraid to take it around the block. What did I do and what do I do????:yikes: |
I eventually ended up with having my x5 fixed at the dealer, it was vacuum leak, the advisor explained the location to me but I was not clear at all. but basically some plastic parts had cracks and it caused air pressure low in the engine. the parts cost nothing, labor was 3 hour on the bill. good luck.
by the way, I am now 75% qualified to join the 4 for 4 club. three window regularors were replaced in the pate sixe months. other that than, I am happy driving my x5. Quote:
