how to use battery charger?

Hello,

got back from trip, and found dead battery again.
since it was too late to go get new battery, I got battery charger from my buddy - DieHard 10/2/50 amp. Automatic Battery Charger
I'm charging my battery outside vehicle and have few questions,

1. should I set 2 amp or 10 amp?

and from the manual, it says connect red clip to positive (+) then connect NEGATIVE (BLACK) charger clip to free end of cable as this picture.
http://www.battery-chargers.com/outside_connect.gif

2. do I really need to connect another cable to battery then connect to negative (-) charger clip?
or I can just connect negative charger clip to battery directly?
:dunno:

I got replaced my battery recently so don't want to bring my X5 to dealershop again.

anyone can help me to find answers?

Thank you!!

I would set it on 10A.

Using the jumper cable (and connecting it last) is so that any sparks that are created when you connect or disconnect the clips are away from the battery (where gases are produced during charging). You can skip the jumper cable, but be careful that the charger is turned off before you connect it to the battery, and before you disconnect it. Exploding batteries are dangerous.
