Snow
 

I was up in Vermont this weekend with my X5 and ran into some snow.

I have the stock 18 inch Michelin on my X5 and it drove great around town.
Went up and down snow covered road/hills with no problem.

On the Highway it did well thought it was slippery and you could feel it; don't know if snow tires would help on the highway?

I use the same tires in winter too, but I think snows would be way better...

My problem was that the fast lane was not fully cleaned and had slush and snow on it.

I could use the lane to pass when it had snow on it but when it has slush it was really too slippery not sure how much help the snows would be?

The pirelli Ice and snow would help a lot but U still gotta use common sens when it snows and take it easy!

Yes I did take a little slower but it was clear that the X5 drives better than almost anything else on the road. It was great fun to drive it on local roads but on the highway you really had to focus.

Our '01, non X-Drive, with dedicated snows was nearly
bullet proof on our very steep Mtn roads and, in the
many high speed haul azz trips back and forth from
NC to NJ/NY.

It is an expense and trade off, handling-wise, but
dedicated snows are like wearing sneakers in lieu
of slipon, leather sole, Ferragamos to play street
ball in...I can only imagine XDrive with snows!

If you drive in snow a couple times per year, it's
probably not worth it. If you are driving more often
and wanna spend the dough and time to do the
seasonal swap, the diff is freakin amazing...
not bulletproof, but amazing, imo.

PS: Did you get your D's Cougar snow tarred'?

It don't see real snow very often, first time since I purchased my 2005 X5.

I did get snow for the Cougar but that's my daughters car.

I have Xdrive on my 04 and it is fantastic in snow. I use 18" Pirelli Scorpions for winter and 19" Diamaris in summer. The winters are not noisy and handle well on dry pavement. I am sure that I would pay a wear penalty if I drove them through the spring - I change over at the beginning of April.

The X5 really inspires confidence on the road.
