the collision damage didn't look THAT bad ............. what can cause engine fires in cars these days?

I've seen plenty of burned cars at my uncle's body shop. That X5 is big time scorched. Even the engine covers went up in smoke.

Nope, I was just browsing our local salvage auction. They have a completely toasted M3 convertible (everything that is not metal is gone) there as well (with seemingly no collision damage). My guess is either a mechanics or manufacturing fault.
