My low beam burned out.
I have a 2003 X5 4.4 with halogen headlights. One of my low beams has burned out. Where can I find a replacement bulb other than at the stealership?

Mine was replaced by the dealer for free under warranty

No warranty.. That is why I am trying to avoid the dealer.

Any auto store or ebay should have the bulbs on display. They are quite common.

Well I pulled out the old burned out bulb, took it to checker and bought a new one for $14.99. Replaced and it is working again. I called the dealership and they said they cost $18.99 which is not bad considering the mark ups that the dealership do. The guy at the auto parts at the dealership wanted to make sure that I didn't have xenon lights but the price for the bulbs would then jump up to $250.00 :)

That's because Xenons usually last 10+ years.

I've got a X5 2003 and had both a front left-side turn signal burn out AND a front left Low-Beam Headlight burn out simotaneously. I took the vehicle to the parts dept., and the parts guy said it was just a regular type low beam and gave me two bulbs. One is for the turn-signal replacement and the other for the low-beam replacement.
I DID locate on this site, the instructions for front left-hand turn bulb replacement for the turn signal. I've not seen illustrations/instructions for the low-beam replacement. Anyone want to be kind enough to help me out? Much ...much appreciated. Disneygrad :dunno: |

Below is snapshot of the instructions from owners manual for my 05, I think yours would be the same.
On my previous Mercedes, when the OEM light burnt out, I went to local parts store (Kragen) and bought the Sylvania Silverstar Ultra H7 bulbs, and I was VERY happy with the light output from them. The picture shown in the link above was a pretty close presentation of the improvement I saw. They were a bit pricier, at about $25 each (but had a $10 mail in rebate on the pair), but it was a good price for the quality/improvement. I acutally liked it enough that now, even though my headlights are still working, I am thinking of switching them anyway. Hope this helps. |
Ebay Silverstar Ultras cost a lot cheaper than the local stores. Decent bulbs if you like the whiter look.

Those are good prices at ebay... it seems the cost+shipping is about $30 from ebay. Also, they were not too much whiter than the ones on MB... I don't like the bluish tint myself so I never wanted to get a set that would have a bluish white. These were slightly whiter than OEM, and I liked them a lot. |
