Farewell...

I ended up buying a 2001 540i M-Sport to replace my X5, so for now I'm saying farewell. Thank you for everyone's help over the last few months and I'm sure I'll be checking in periodically for pics and whatnot.

Thanks again.

Jeremy

Good luck!

Good luck, and have a lot of fun with the 540i! Lots of fun stuff you can do to that car.. And IMO, one of the best looking BMWs ever

:goodluck: remember if you need help...the 5-series sedan has components found on the X.

Dad had that same whip, nice car, very fast.

What mods do you have in mind?

Hopefully some deep dish hamman 19s????

MatzoBallsX5 01-25-2007 02:02 AM

Still working on the mod list. Definitely tinting it the first chance I get, then adding some black rims. I love the black/red combo if you haven't noticed. Any ideas?

Yeah please DONT ADD THE BLACK RIMS. :nanana:

It definitely must be a west coast thing for the black rims, everyone else thinks they don't look right...

I'm on the east coast and I am getting my wheels powder coated black in a few weeks, are yours glossy black? also how much did you pay to get them done?

Ah yes, another E39 to the family. For excellent advice, you can go to the roadfly site. A quirky set of owners there, but extremely helpful. I of course can answer some questions that you may have about your new E39 M62 machine!

The sport package (there was no M-Technic package in '01, only '03) is decent, but still too soft, IMHO. I went with H&R springs, Koni adjustable shocks and M5 front and rear sway bars. The felt as if it had dropped about 500 pounds :-) 2001 came stock with Style 32 17" wheels. Time to upgrade!! A very popular choice is the Style 37 M-Parallel OE or replica. I love my SSR GT3s though - FAT lips!!

Besides tires/wheels and suspension, the next thing to do is update the looks - easy and not too expensive - especially if you already have HID. Get the Hella CELIS headlamps, Hella CELIS LED taillamps and clear or smoked side turn indicators. They are all a direct fit without modifications.

Did you get a manual? If so, replace the trans fluid with Royal Purple Synchromax and the diff fluid with RP MaxGear. For relatively cheap and easy performance, a 3.15 LSD from the M5 will fit the bill. I'm running Axxis Deluxe Plus pads and OEM Balo rotors for good braking performance and NO dust (same combo will be on my X5 very soon).

Too many other things to mention, run some ideas up the flagpole - we can flesh them out!! :-)

At least you are staying in the family....enjoy it...

I paid about $75 per rim to have them powder coated and they are the glossy black. It looks great, doesn't chip easily, and also came with a lifetime warranty.

As far as the E39 is concerned, I already have some questions and I haven't even received the car yet. But it did come with a sports package, the interior trim has ///M signs on the shifter as well as on the rims. The rim style is 66, not 32 in my case. And it is a 6 speed manual, I wasn't going to get an automatic. The difference in 0-60 time was a 5.8 for the manual and only 6.2 with an auto.

Any suggestions on the first things I should do to the E39 as soon as it comes in? Not modification suggestions, but suggestions on the engine fluids and other small things that can help the car run better?

Run a fuel system cleaner.

Bayerische 01-25-2007 04:29 PM

Yeah - besides the oil change, I would do the engine air filter, 2 microfilters, brake flush, coolant flush (be very careful with the upper radiator hose - it WILL snap off at regular intervals - usually 50-60K miles), Royal Purple Synchromax in the tranny and Royal Purple MaxGear in the diff, BG 44K in the gas, new spark plugs and check for oil leaking into the spark plug wells, new fuel filter, new wiper inserts, lube all rubber seals, lube all hinges and pivot points, check the ball joints (front and rear) thrust arm bushings, rear sway bar bushings, have a 4 wheel alignment done (even if the tires look OK). Style 66 wheels are nice. The ///M that you see are just little badges, nothing else special over the previous years Sport packages.

What did you sell your X5 for???? I hope you got the price you wanted!

MatzoBallsX5 01-25-2007 05:58 PM

I actually didn't end up selling my X5, my Dad is planning on taking it back to Denver with him for a winter car. Although I'm not too sure how well the low profile tires are going to work for him considering the mass amount of snow Colorado keeps getting. He loves the X5 though so at least I know it's going back to a good home, although knowing him he'll end up selling it within a few months and buying something else. I think a 2003 is too old for him, he always updates. Plus, he still has a Cayenne Turbo to screw around with, I'm sure one of the cars will be going soon.

streetsoffire 01-25-2007 07:52 PM

MatzoBallsX5: I dont know if this helps; there was a member who wanted to trade his 02M5 for an X5 (4.6); since you are going the E39 route. Can't hurt to talk to him.........black02m5 is who he be.......
