Changed Battery???

Hey guys...im new to X5world but have owned my x5 for 7months now...Its an 2002 4.4 sport package with all options expect for the phone 84,000 (out of warranty)....anyways i was pumping gas today and when i went to start the jeep it was clear the battery was dead...long story short i changed the battery with a motormaster (canadian tire- only place open) in my garage. Now the battery light is illuminated on the display :banghead: ...It appears to be driving fine but the battery light wont come off. Im trying to save myself from going to the dealer....any suggestions???

I didn't know Canadian Tire carried BMW batteries. What size and how much did it cost? I need a new battery soon and looked at PartsSource who don't carry them.

changed battery

its not a bmw battery...i had to change the battery when bmw was closed. Its a motormaster...paid $131.00CDN...I dont think that is the reason why the battery light is on in the dash...Anybody with any idea of what it may be. Im not under warranty and i dont want to pay bmw if i dont have to.

Thanks

The reason (normally) the light would be on
is that the alternator wasnt working properly, ie.
undercharge or over charge. Make sure you hooked up correctly
and it is possible something fried if you were jump started..
May have to take it in for diagnosis....Or maybe its the
I sense a ungerman part module acting up... ha ha

Check you have charging voltage (13.5+ V) with the engine running. If not check altenator, belts etc.
JEEP????

I just changed the battery last month on my 4.4 02, got the battery from the dealer and no problem.
Only on the very first start a few icons on the dashboard stays light on, like DSC, ABS, and a few more. But after driving a few blocks all the icons canceled out and evrerything goes back to normal.

I don't think canadian tire has the proper battery for x5.

Try to turn your steering wheel all the way to the right and then all the way to the left. This restarts the computer and clears all the little lights on the dash board. This will only clear if the battery is the right one, and that everything was done right. Remember, when jump starting your X5, you need to turn on the A/C and the rear heated window to keep the rpm a little higher to be clear of electric surges, this info is in your manual (section for jump starting).... The battery light is on because the current is not right. You must not have the right battery. If it is an alternator, then your X5 will die out in a few days or hours. Go get that checked out before you continue to drive.... Good luck....

Thanks guys for all your help...Took my baby in today to the dealership and found out that its the alternator:banghead: ..On top of that i wont be getting it back until monday evening. I dont understand how an 02 with 84,000km ends up with a bad altenator. I still love the X5 though.

Thanks Again.

Alternators are supposed to have a life expectancy of 4-5 years max. After that they have a better chance of going bad. Just any FYI.... I'm glad you found the problem...

That must only apply to the "Ultimate Driving Machine" as most other makes do much better.
