question on heat

On my 01 x5 tonight, I could not get a suffficient amount of heat while driving in 20degree weather. Felt as if the fan was not on because even when aI moved the heat to high it had the same affect as if it was still on low heat. What could cause sucha failure.

Sincerely,

Cold & frostbitten

I'm by far no expert, in fact, just a new owner, however, I would imagine a dirty / clogged air fliter could cause reduced airflow, but again, it would have to be severly dirty I'm sure to have such an effect.

Do you mean the fan speed did not seem to increase. If that is the case I would say that you need to replace your final stage resistor. DIY on the homepage and the cause of many fan problems.

Had to replace the resistor and thermostat. Erratic blower and cold air. Cost $450, also the temp gauge pegged to hot after a small amount of time driving. 2 other X5's in today at BMW for identical problems. Sounds like a trend. Warm and $450 dollars poorer.

I don't think the X likes the cold weather, so many write-ups related to cold weather.
I spent $70 to replace the final stage resistor, try to do it yourself , not hard to fix.

thanks for the advice, however my truck is working now and I'm not sure why, but I like it.

Probably a stuck thermostat. Opened up and you got warm air.

Don't be fooled

Mine was acting the same way until changing the resistor. Good for a while then not, then good again. Get it scanned, the faults will be logged and change the resistor. Heat is good.
