Oil consumption problem
 

I have a 2006 4,4 and a 2004 4.4.

I have 33000 miles on the 2004 and it has not burned a drop of oil between changes since new.

Now my 2006 currently has 6000 miles on it and ive already had to put in 2 quarts and its a little low again.

So I go to the dealer and tell them and they say its normal and by definition combustable egines burn oil. So I say bullshit then how do you figure that my identical 2004 has not burned a drop yet. He just stared at me like i dropped a bomb on him. The guy had no clue. He just continued to say its normal like he was a robot programed to say that.

So what is really going on hear. Does anyone know why its burning so much oil and how 2 exact same engines can be burning oil at such a different rate. 1 burns non and the other burns a quart every 1k

Yes, consuming oil is normal. I wouldn't worry about 2 qts in 6000 miles, that is very close to the 2 litres that I use every 8000-10000 km. The dealer will not usually treat it as high consumption unless it is over 1 quart per 1000 miles.

If your previous vehicle doesn't use any, fine, but that isn't to say that it defines the standard.

Consumption will vary depending on how the rings have seated, which can be impacted by production tolerances, lube oil used, and break-in procedures.

I agree but something just doesnt seem right.

I broke in both cars in the same manner and they are identical engines with the same lubrication

By the way out of all the BMWs ive had or have the 2006 4.4 burns more oil then all of them put together.

did you check if you have any oil leaks?? try to check under the car before you drive off.

definately no oil leaks. I park in the garage and its spic and span clean. Not one spec of oil.

There's some variability in the manufacturing and assembly process. Perhaps you just have a block, set of pistons and rings on opposite ends of the tolerances. As long as the rate of consumption doesn't get worse over time your 2006 may have nothing wrong with it.

not to mention oil rings seat differently. 2 qts in 6000 miles is no concern. Quart every 500 miles like my m5 is.

Which of your M5s was burning a quart every 500miles. I assume it was the E39 since that was a serious problem in early models. But I dont remember what year you had. Mine was a later build and I never had that problem.

At 6k your engine is still going through break-in. I wouldn't worry about it, but I would keep an eye on it and make sure that you don't fall below the minimum level. If it's not under the car or in the air at startup, I think it's a fair assumption that your rings haven't seated yet. Be patient and stay on top of it.

I've got a 2006 4.4i with 13700 miles now. I've added about 1.5 quarts of oil so far. First car I've every had that's needed this. Kind of annoying if you ask me.
