Defogger settings!
 

Hello all, To this day i can't seem to figure out the settings for front defogger. When i turn it on, it goes to full blast, and if i try turning it down, it jsut turns off. Wht the hell! Is this how it suppose to be? Aren't there any happy mediums?

Unfortunately no. That's one of the biggest compliants I have with the E53.

I think you can set it manually, by pushing the button with the arrow pointing straight up, but that never seemed to work as well. :dunno:

That's exactly what I do - it works fine. If the windshield has a lot of condensation, press the AC button as well - regardless of the temp setting, and it will work wonders. I always use this method instead of the hurricane method.

Works fine for me to. The pictograph button for the defroster is actually for "Max Defrost" and when you think of it that way it works fine. If you want the air to flow on the windshield just use the button that sends air to the windshield.

Ditto - I found that boosting the fan speed up and not using the "automatic" setting solved my problem

Ok i guess i'll have to try that out today. Feel stupid now...but its just the only vehicle i every came across does that. Lets see how this pans out.

I was just wondering about this same issue because my wife drives our 2002 325xi and when you press the "DEFOG" button for the windshield you can then reduce the fan speed but the setting still keeps the air directed at the windshield.

I think its definitely weird that BMW doesn't use the same settings for all of their vehicles.

Pressing the up arrow doesn't really direct the air at the windshield, it uses the vents closer to the passengers and angles the air up and toward the cabin. Thankfully, that usually does a decent job of clearing the windshield in the X5, but not as good as the actual defogger setting...

Anyhow, it's frustrating, and I'm surprised that nobody has come out with a DIY fan tweak to remedy this.

That's a defroster guys, not a defogger. That's why it blows full blast hot air at the windshield.

For front defog, I just push the up arrow, turn on the AC, and manually adjust the fan speed.
