Engine whine/whimper/grind? on startup in cold

So the last couple days its been extremely cold here in DC metro area, and have noticed a whine/high pitched grind for like half a second when starting the car up. I turned car off again this morning and was able to reproduce a second time.

I just had Inspection II done, new plugs installed, coolant/brake flush so I dont think it should be the plugs

anyone seen this before and know what it is? Should it be corrected ASAP?

Thanks!

You would whine too if you were left out in the bitter cold all night long. Could be the tranny, transfer case or a belt. If it goes away after only half a second, I would feel ok with that.

most likly powersteering pump its nothing to worry about it is just because PS fluid thickens when it gets cold

Mine did this too yesterday when starting it up to leave work. It sounded like a gasp and only last a split-second. It didn't do it this morning since it's garaged at home. I'll check it out again this evening.

Cold-start condition with the fan clutch, perhaps?

Could be the belts, that happens when it's cold out.

Mine has been a little hard to start lately as well. Again, just assuming its the cold. Yesterday the one-touch start stuck and just kept cranking the ignition until I stopped it. After that everything seems to be back to normal.

My guess of the best way to avoid this...start taking the metro...eww...

yup mine does that 2 when its absolutely freezing out....sounds kinda scary
