Suggestions on tires?
I have a 2004 X5 3.0i with the Sport Packages' 18 inches wheels
I had been running around 30K miles with the tires it came with and it wearing out pretty bad now... so I was thinking about putting some new tires on soon(at least for the front ones since they are about to pop like every second...lol) The stock ones were Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus (255/55R-18, Speed Rating HR) I'm thinking about buying tires that have VR or ZR Speed Ratings.. so for you guys who bought or tried those VR or ZR tires on X5, how much difference does it make? and any suggestion on some performance tires that would fit on the stock wheels I have? Thanks!:thumbup: |
you can go with a higher speed rating although you do jeopardize tire life. the current ratings are rated for driving up to 110, but that does not mean you are limited to it. it really comes down to if you want to spend a little more money, and if that justifies the extra grip and 'performance'

with a higher speed rating, the tires are softer, but i'm not sure if that will make the car feel different. hmmm...interesting...

not to be one of those people who follow branding...but you cannot go wrong with michelans or pirellis...
with that said, yokohama is okay, you don't really have to worry about quality issues...although i've heard some quality issues like they're not perfectly round, are mis-calibrated, and unstable/cause a lot of vibration... |
I had Yokohamas and wore through a set in less than 10,000 miles. I really liked the Toyo Proxes I had on my Expedition. They will be the next shoes on my X.

Michelin Diamaris 4x4 are excelent tires.
Mine are 285/45 x 19 (back) and 255/50 x 19 (front). And the car goes like on rails. Winter tires: Vredstein Xtreme 235/65 x 17. |

I can't say that I'd endorse the Toyos Proxes. They are very attractively priced but they get pretty noisy. My set has about 20K miles on them and while there is plenty of tread left, they are very noisy. The drone on the freeway and even kind of "whoop" when you're braking. Did you experience excessive noise with them on your Expedition? I'm waiting to hear more about the Michelin Latitudes. |

but i just discovered that one of the Sam's club around me listed those tires as special order items on the website :popcorn: |
if you purchase from sam's club...(the equivilent of costco)...you get lifetime complementary tire patchs, alignments, and rotations...not sure about alignments...

no problem...i'll always be here...post whoring :D:D:D

If you can find the Diamaris in the right size, I'd recommend those. I have the 19's and love 'em. Great grip, they seem to be wearing as well as can be expected for soft summer skins, and they seem to still be quiet. Have you thought about going to 19's or 20's? If you do that, you'll really notice a significant difference in handling. Let us know what you decide!

btw.. anyone know where I can get the 20 inches Y-spoke(style 214) wheels that came as an upgrade of the sportpackage on the new 2007 X5s? I had been dreaming about those wheels the first time I seen them...lol |
My Toyo Proxes were not loud but that does seem to be a common complaint. Maybe I drive with the stereo really loud!!!! (I listened to the truck drive without the stereo on and swear they were not loud!!!)
|
You are right, there seems to be no Michelins in your size. Here is a danish tire guide: http://www.daekonline.dk/sommerdaek.html
Well - a set of new rims would make it possible to get the Diamaris. Good luck with the project. |

but the link is pretty useful for future tire choices  thanks!;) |

Hey be careful getting your tires mounted at Sam's. Make sure that they have the right equipment for mounting tires on big alloy wheels, and make d*** sure that they have somebody that knows how to use it. Sam's club bought me a brand new 17" M3 wheel a few years ago when they scratched one up trying to mount a 45 series tire on it.
And tell them not to use an impact wrench on your wheels, they'll scratch the hell out of the lug nut bore!!! |
that is some good advice...
