DSC off V.S. manual shift

I was doing a little experimenting last night. The thought crossed my mind to turn of the DSC to see if throttle lag would be reduced from a dead stop. I turned off the DSC and put the vehicle in sport mode. I guess I bumped the shifter forward putting in manual mode first gear without even realizing it. When I took off the cars acceleration seemed to be the same as with the DSC on, but when the vehicle reached the top of first gear it didn’t automatically up shift like usual. I was surprised to find the engine racing against a rev limiter and the transmission restricted to first gear. I immediately shifted to Drive and the vehicle resumed a normal shift pattern. I was fairly quick at recognizing the problem and I am very happy the racing RPM’s didn’t hurt my engine. I think this could be a possible situation in any X5 or X3 so I am posting this story to give everyone a heads up.

thanks for the tip, must go try it

how do you know if the DSC is intervening? my indicator in my gauge cluster doesn't blink like the one in the e90, although technically that's DTC...

Yeah, did it two weeks ago. If memory serves, no auto
shifting at all in the manual mode. A friend of mine has a
pepper and he says his will shift in manual mode if you
don't.

No, my X3 will shift in manual mode. I've done it before. Sometimes after driving for a while at a constant speed one forgets they are in manual mode - especially when the car downshifts itself to M2.

Needless to say the music was loud, and I was wondering something felt different. A look at the tach and I was at redline, and then it shifted.

Now the question here, is whether or not DSC being off removes this auto shifting capability. It seems, as per one board member's experience, it does... I'll have to go try...

Yes that exactly what i was getting at. The vehicle can still be shifted in manual mode, but it won't auto shift in manual with the DSC off.

My car will not shift automatically as it approaches redline, even with dsc on. I think this is because of the Dinan software. I had it in first on time and didnt realize and I went all the way into the red. The tach didnt bounce?

I have a 4.8is and in manual mode, as far as I can tell the car will upshift and downshift for me if the revs get too high (redline) or too low (1k) (VERY frustrating). This is regardless of DSC (on or off). Not only that but I thought redline was 7k when it shifts at 6.5k... grrrr, I want my last horses!

The rev limiter would have prevented any damage to your engine. Also A BMW engine like most "sporty" engine can go over red zone for a short period of time without any impact on the engine.

I think 1st gear and maybe 2nd upshifts prematurely and don't know why. I think that engine reaches max hp at 6200rpm anyway, so you're not really being cheated of your 360 horses.

I must try this DSC off, manual mode on the X3.

I concur. I'm not technically robbed of my horses :) however we do fall off lower in the power range as a result. Also, as you said, it seems that 1st and 2nd do that, because when I pushed 3rd I reached 6500 with no auto upshifting, I had to shut it down because I was on the highway and it wasn't the appropriate time to test out any further...

Yes it is the Dinan software. Same on my car, it wont move in manual mode unless you tell it too. I guess it could come in handy if I ever have to tow something.

AzNMpower32 05-08-2007 09:46 PM

Nope, this trick doesnt work on the X3. Still has a mind of its own in manual mode with DSC off.
